Occupation: Iâm retired from Kuehne Nagel, a logistics supply chain company, since 2004. I was a vice president of sales for the Eastern region, but I wanted to be home more as my boys were getting older â sort of the reverse of what most people do, I guess. I work part-time now, at the Sandy Hook School library. Iâm on the Legislative Council, on the parent committee for the Mako Swim Team in Brookfield, and I do a lot of other volunteer work.
Family: My husband, Bruce Lafky, and I have been married since 1994. We have two boys, Nick, who is 15 and a sophomore at Newtown High School, and Chris is 12 and at St Rose School.
Pets: We have a golden retriever named Dennis, that we have just discovered is the half-brother to one of The Bee office dogs, Rosie. We have a cat named Josie, and two red-eared slider turtles, Becky and Houdini.
How long have you lived in Newtown? We moved here July 4, 1997.
What do you like to do in your free time? We live on Lake Zoar and have a boat, so we water ski and Jet Ski a lot in the summer. I barefoot water ski, and the boys like to wake board. In the winter, we like to snow ski. I do like to read, and I belong to a local book club.
What are you reading currently? Iâm reading Major Pettigrewâs Last Stand by Helen Simonson. Itâs about an older, English gentleman who is at a crossroads in his life. Itâs kind of touching.
Do you have a favorite travel destination? I have a brother in St Thomas, so we try to visit there every year, and a sister who has a home in Okemo, Vt., so we spend a lot of wintertime there. Itâs one of the benefits of having lots of brothers and sisters, and I have three of each.
What is the best thing about Newtown? Itâs so beautiful. When we decided to buy a home, I knew I wanted to buy a place on Lake Zoar, where I grew up water skiing. Not a day goes by that I donât stand on the deck and look at the view, and think how lucky we are. This will be our home the rest of our lives. Itâs just a beautiful place to live.
Do you have someone you admire? I think that would be my husband, Bruce. He has such strength of will and great character that I really admire. It inspires me to strive to be better. He is amazing. He had to work very hard to get what he got, and itâs something to admire.
Do you have a personal philosophy? I believe in giving back to the community. At this point in my life, itâs what is important. And Iâve learned to live life in the present. You shouldnât look back with regret that you didnât enjoy the life you were given. Life is such a gift, in so many ways.
What makes you laugh? My kids like to find funny YouTube videos and I am always amazed at how creative people are. We enjoy watching them together as a family. And people who take themselves too seriously make me laugh. Life is too short to think you are that self-important.
