Winter Guard Sweeps All Three Divisions
In the first Winter Guard competition of the season, Newtownâs Junior, Junior Varsity, and Varsity divisions all took first place at the Musical Arts Conference (MAC) show held at Masuk High School on Saturday, January 28.
With a score of 73.4, the Newtown High School Varsity Scholastic National A had the highest score of the entire show.
The Varsity Winter Guardâs show, âBack on the Road,â had the 20 members, dressed as auto mechanics, perform with flags, rifles, sabers, and tires to the Tracy Chapman song âFast Car.â Judges awarded the guard a score of 73.4, 2.7 points higher than nearest competitor, Arlington High School.
âCome What Mayâ is the name of the NHS Junior Varsity show, featuring elegant and dramatic choreography and uniforms of red, black, and silver. In a crowded field of nine high schools, the Newtown Junior Varsity earned a score of 67.9, besting many of the other high schoolâs varsity-level guard. The Newtown Junior Varsity has 22 members this year and is coached by NHS Varsity captain senior Grace McKinley, and junior Grace Hubbard, along with instructors Bob Findley and Janos Pergely.
Newtown Juniors, comprising eight fifth and sixth graders from Reed Intermediate School, posted a score of 52.9, 7.8 points higher than Bethel. The Juniorsâ show, âAt the Hop,â includes 1950s music and features a backdrop of musical notes and a jukebox. The girls dressed in pink poodle skirts. The Newtown Junior Winter Guard is coached by NHS Varsity captains Sara Hetzer and Victoria Hanulik, along with Mr Findley.
This Saturday, February 4, Newtown will be competing at Brookfield High School, beginning at 5 pm.
