Midget

The Cheetahs played well for their first five on five game. They were led on offense by Emma Archiere, Julia Weiland, Yvonne Wei and Eliza Roth. Molly McCleary, Peri Meeker, Erin Kornhaas, Amanda Hagsichi and Shannon Muckell played aggressive defense trying to stop the tough Orange Crush team. The Texiera sisters, Elizabeth and Catie, contributed both offensively and defensively for the short while they were at the game.

The Murphy Basketball Camp Orange Crushers had another impressive showing during their first official five on five game. Kate Petersen, Amyla Posey, Rachel Arena and Taegan Smith held the fast-paced offensive attack, while the stingy defense was lead by Samantha DelGuidice, Grace Eurell, Rebecca Filiato and Ameila Hufschmied.

The Deadly Sharks loved making the transition to a full court game. The team was very active defensively, led by the quick hands and scoring by Emma Magazu, Olivia Buchler, Shannon Kelleher, Ella Hage and Julia Gerace. Abby Stites played well on both ends and Sarah Savinelli, Maddie Hintze and Julia Dolan turned in terrific all-around efforts.

Bantam

Celtics 30-Purple Crush 28: High scorers were Genevieve Murray with 14 points, Kate Ryan with 8 and Kelsey Pearson with 6.

Intermediate

Inspirations For Your Home, LLC/ Mean Green Fighting Machine 34 - Space Narwhals 28: Samantha Biiccho’s fantastic hustle and determination gave her what she needed to read the Narwhal offense and cause several key turnovers in a hard fought match. Cousins Casey McClean (2 points) and Dylan Zahansky (14 points) fed each other the ball for the go ahead points late in the game. Alexandra Futterman also brought her “A” offensive game to contribute 15 points. It was enough to overcome a scrappy Narwhal team who was led by the hot hand of Cory Mangold (18 points) who led all scorers. Mangold was helped out on the offensive end by Hayley Lambert with 8 points. It was the tenacious defense from Sonia Ahmaripopur and Briana Castellano which kept the game in reach but the Narwhals could not overcome a cold shooting second quarter.

Shooting Stars 24 - Dr Della Schmid Chiropractic Centre/Sunburst 21: The Shooting Stars pulled out a victory against Sunburst with a beautiful buzzer beater shot by Catherine Shaw. Defensive standouts included Sarah Widman, Briana Lovely and Beth Savinelli. Charlie Condon (8 points), Sarah Widman (8 points) and Allie Eurell (2 points) were both hot on offense. The sunburst, playing shorthanded on Saturday, nearly pulled off the upset before eventually falling 24-21. Sarah Dowling (18 points) led the Sunburst offense with Rachel O’Grady (3 points) and Jackie Gouveia (2 points) chipping in as well. Grace Pettinelli and Emma Schmidt-Tarnish were aggressive on the boards, while Kendra Saunders and Chloe Bigwarfe played great defense for the Sunburst.

Hip Hoopsters 20 - Tasmanian Devils 18: The Hip Hoopsters prevailed on Saturday in a defensive battle with the Tasmanian Devils. The Hip Hoopsters came out strong and jumped out to a 14-2 half time lead behind the offense of Grace Corcoran (4 points) and the Findley twins, Camryn and Madison (2 points each). The Tassies could not buy a basket, but they kept the game within reach with some tenacious defense. The second half started much like the first half with the Tassies down by 12 late in the third until Sienna Cummings found a hole in the tough Hoopster’s defense, led by Liz Weisgerber, Heather Azzarito and Cathy Hyeon, to score 4 points in the third quarter. The cardiac Tassies had to rely on another late run if they were to have a chance. It started with a stingy pressing defense which created some turnovers and easier scoring opportunities. The defense led by Kayla O’Rourke, Sarah Brittin and Ally Tassiello allowed Jackie Moccio (10 points) and Chrissy Sgobbo (2 points) to find the bottom of the net. With under 5 seconds remaining, Sienna Cummings came away with a steal and got the shot off just before the buzzer, but it was not meant to be as the Tassies narrowly lost to the league leading Hoopsters.

Raymond James Financial/Shock 24 - Monstrosity 16: The Shock had a great team effort on both the offensive and defensive end in a win against a strong Monstrosity team. Abby Pearson (9 points) with Lexi Leidlein (4 points), Jordan Williams (4 points) and Julia Anderson (7 points) evening out the scoring. Angela Vadola and Julia Clarke had key defensive stops to lead the defense in a strong win against a strong team. Monstrosity lost a hard fought game to a hustling Shock team but, although they were down early, they never lost their intensity and played hard to the end. Monstrosity was led offensively by the stat-sheet stuffing Dani Otero (10 points, 3 rebounds and 5 steals), Anna Cartelli and Carly Swierbut (points each). Much of that offense flowed through point guard Caitlyn Wilson (6 assists) and was created through the defensive effort of Brooke Anous (6 steals), but it was not enough on Saturday.

Grade 4

Filan LLC Nighthawks 37 – Celtics 30: The Filan LLC Nighthawks prevailed over the Celtics in an excellent back and forth game. Team Captain for the game, Faith O’Hara led the defense along with Grace Bertsche and Ryssa Swanson. Karsen Pirone spread the ball well and led with 14. Angela Carriero added 10 with long-range shooting. Jane Shearin, Kali Ryder and Sarah Tressler dropped in a bucket each with Megan Riccardi adding 3 and Hallie Filan knocking down 2 jump shots for the Nighthawks. Rallying from a two-point deficit with four minutes to play, the Hawks pulled together for the victory over the strong Celtics squad.

Grade 5

Newtown 36, Shelton 14: Lauren Adams’ passing game was superb, with numerous assists and tough defense. Jackie Matthews and Kim Buttery ran the point with composure, moving the ball well and forcing multiple turnovers. Kristen Cirone led all scorers with 10 points. Tess Davenport played aggressive defense and drove hard to the basket for 7 points.

Newtown 35, Darien 10 - An impressive defensive effort by the whole team kept Darien away from the basket for most of the second half. Annika Brady was dominant on the boards and chipped in 6 points. Jenna Lavelle and Carolina Stubbs were strong in the paint on both ends of the floor. Alison Kelleher out-hustled her opponents, distributing the ball well and playing solid defense. Nicki DaPra was on fire, snagging rebounds, diving for loose balls and leading all scorers with 8 points. Newtown is now 6-1 in FCBL league play.

Grade 6

Newtown 31, Westport 26: Newtown won a tough game against rival Westport due to the strong inside play of Erin Burns (11 points) and Kira Smith (4 points). Leading by just one point at the half, Newtown finished strong behind the guard play of Marcella Daily, who finished with 7 points, and Sarah Houle who added 4 points along with several key steals.

Newtown 35, Southbury 10: Julia Haskins led all scorers with 7 points in a nonconference win against Southbury. Guards Marcella Daily, Rylee Mulligan and Julia Doyle combined for 12 points and controlled the game throughout.

 

Grade 7

Newtown 27, Brookfield 23: In a physical defensive battle, Newtown hit its foul shots down the stretch and was able to hold off Brookfield. Nikki Zaccaro had a game-high 11 points to go along with 7 rebounds and 5 steals. Hailey Conrad had 6 points, including 4 from the charity stripe in the closing minutes. Olyvia Shaw played the press perfectly and came up with 6 steals. Jess Maturo ran the offense from the point and contributed 4 rebounds and 4 steals. Cassidy Datin provided strong interior defense, pulling down 3 rebounds and blocking 2 shots.

Newtown 36, Shelton 22: Newtown set a team record with five 3-pointers, resulting in its largest margin of victory for the year. Colleen McCarthy (8 points) and Meghan Doyle (6 points) each hit two 3-pointers, while Conrad (9 points) made one from beyond the arc. Jillian Pieretti had a conventional three-point play and scored 5 points. On the boards, Olyvia Shaw had 6 rebounds and Doyle 4. Conrad led the defense with 6 steals, while Shaw and Doyle had 5 apiece. Bella Luciano displayed fine passing skills, dishing out 2 assists to go along with a basket. Natalie Shaker (3 rebounds) was effective on the press, making 3 steals.

Grades 7–8

Style 41, CTS Micro Flintstones 24: Olivia Hamula scored a league season high 19 points to lead the Style to victory. Nicole Russo was equally impressive, pouring in 16 of her own. Stefanie Carr handed out 5 assists and Amanda Solomon was the defensive star of the game, recording 4 steals. Anna Buzzanca scored 10 points to pace the Flintstones and Emily Bell chipped in 6.

One Eyed Pig Da Bears 31, South Cove Globetrotters 15: Madilyn Cole scored 8 points to lead Da Bears to victory. Brittany Meisenheimer added 6, while Lindsay Hoyt, Chelsea Piccirillo and Megan Kelleher each scored 4. Sarah Bender added 3 points and Simone Afriyie added a basket to complete the scoring. Jessica Shairer scored 7 points for the South Cove Globetrotters. Kamdynn Moroney handed out 4 assists and Caroline Caporale provided the defensive pressure, swiping 5 steals. Christina Moore cleaned the glass, pulling down 8 rebounds.

E-Lemonaders 30, World Wide Coverage Corporation Spartans 16: The E-Lemonaders were led to victory behind Aimee Talbot’s 10 points. Erin Tressler handed out 6 assists and Amanda Albanesi recorded 7 steals. Ashley Lynch controlled the paint by hauling in 12 rebounds. The Spartans played a valiant game with only six players to start and five in the fourth quarter. Top scorer for the Spartans was Emily Neave with 6 points. In the fourth period Neave and Marissa Thill worked together chipping away inside with good passes. Thill scored 4 points with assists from Neave. Emily Dirga, Grace Larsen and Haley Williams each scored 2 points. Defensive star Grace Larsen forced numerous turnovers with her speed and tenacity. Julia Wiberg pulled down 10 rebounds.

The Blitz 34, Celtics 11: Emily Montoya scored a season high 12 points to lead The Blitz to victory. Maddie Pirone was all over the court, using her speed and quickness to record 6 steals and convert many of them into fast break layups, resulting in 10 points. Carly Kreshpan started the game on fire, scoring 6 points in the first four minutes, finishing with 10 for the game. Kayla O’Sullivan played outstanding defense and rounded out the scoring with a nice turnaround jump shot. Lauren King was the other defensive star, playing pressure defense all game long, resulting in numerous turnovers. Madeline Marlin was a big factor on the glass, hauling in 12 rebounds. Kayla Kordish led The Celtics with 4 points, while Tegan Doherty added 3. Diana Kirkman and Michaela Jackman each scored a basket. Ashleigh Shaw pulled down 6 rebounds and Danielle Mola played outstanding defense.

Boys

Grades 2-3

The Slammers had another fun weekend. The Sortino boys, Matt and Nick, continued their excellent all-around play. Zachary Kugler was a scoring machine for the Slammers. Daniel Sibley was a hustling rebounder all game long.

The Defenders continue to work hard on team defense and did a great job getting back on defense and stopping the ball. The defensive thrust was led by Aiden Berry, Jacob Schumer and Philip Cappelli. They played tough man-to-man defense and hustled after loose balls and rebounds. Also showing good hustle after the ball and strong offensive moves towards the basket and putting up shots were Arav Dave and Devin Herbstman, with Danny Pond running a few fast breaks and also getting back to help stop the other team on defense. Both Eric Gay and Matt Weisgerber had good all-around games, playing strong on both ends of the floor.

The Bolts were led by Hayden Miller and Jonathan Taylor, who each scored several baskets on impressive drives. Ryan Verdi and RJ Eller played their usual outstanding defense while Ryder Palumbo grabbed many rebounds. Lyle Petralese, James Iaropoli and Sean O’Sullivan did a fantastic job running the team from the point guard position.

The Black Dragons showed energy and fire this past weekend by showing a strong effort in all phases of the game. Trevor Jacozzi and Matthew Williams led the scoring attack, while Gavin Murray showed exceptionally passing, rebounding and teamwork. Matthew Mattera had a strong defensive effort against the Newtown Heat.

The Gecko attack was led by the scoring of Jack Petersen, the tight defense of Noah Dinallo and the hustle of Justin Zemo. Zachary Katsuleres and Ethan Paley were all over the boards snagging rebounds, while Jake Mailloux dribbled through the defense all game long.

Jacob Hinden led the way for the Musketeers scoring early and often, while Jack Street, Luke Hannan ran the fast break to perfection. Brendan Morrissey, Aditya Ramadhar and Julian Totir dominated the paint grabbing every rebound in sight.

For the Nighthawks, Chris Shaker, Connor Mandarano and Aiden Finnegan led the Nighthawks’ offensive attack leading the team in points and assists. On the defensive side, Evan Wei, RJ Figueroa and Liam O’Connell played tough man-to-man defense and controlled the boards.

Grade 3

Mavs Blue 23 vs Mavs White 16: Luke Hannan led the way for Blue by netting 12 points, Trevor Barrett 5 points, Michael Haddick 4 and Stephen Cotton 2. Trevor Jacozzi ripped down 3 boards, while Haddick had 7, while Hannan had 6. The White Mavs led by CJ Demers with 10 points and 7 boards. Nick Fischer had 2 points, Neil Kalra had 2 and TJ O’Connell knocked down a shot to round it out. Fischer added 5 boards and Miller had 2 more with O’Connell grabbing a board as well.

Grade 4

Blue Mavs 30, St Theresa 4th Grade 26: In a game that came down to the final minutes, the Blue Mavs edged out the St Theresa fourth grade squad 30-26 on Saturday in Newtown. Joey Rios scored 10 points and Nick Kalra connected for 9 to lead the Blue Mavs offense. Keenan Murphy added 6 to the score, while Josh Taylor tossed in 3 and Zach Droukas hit for 2. The Blue Mavs were tough on defense, with Rios and Kalra combining for 11 steals and Liam Murphy snatching 3. The Blue Mavs were strong on the boards, with Rios grabbing 12 rebounds, Keenan Murphy 6 and Liam Murphy 3. St Theresa came back to tie the game at the 5-minute mark, but relentless defense from Dillon Robinson, Drew Mitchell and Kieran Coffey helped the Blue Mavs take back the lead and secure the win.

White Mavs 43, Mavs 3rd Grade 9: Jack Mulligan and Kyle Good combined for 20 points and 15 rebounds as the White Mavs went on to beat the 3rd Grade Mavs 43-9 on Saturday in Newtown. Kyle Sullivan had a hot hand from the outside as he netted 8, while Jack Lydon chipped in with 6 points. Jack Kuligowski and Sam Eppers played well at the point, while Max Wrage and and Charlie Eppers had strong all-around games. Neil Kalra scored 2 points and CJ Demers added 7 points to lead the way for the 3rd Grade Mavs.

New Canaan 32, Blue Mavs 14: New Canaan’s pressure trap defense proved too much for the Blue Mavs in the 32-14 loss on Sunday in Milford. Liam Murphy sparked the offense with the team’s first 3-point shot, while Nick Kalra connected for 6 points, and Kieran Coffey and Keenan Murphy tossed in 2 points each. Joey Rios and Josh Taylor combined for 12 rebounds, while Zach Droukas, Kalra, Keenan Murphy and Liam Murphy grabbed 2 each. Dillon Robinson and Drew Mitchell kept the pressure on the New Canaan guards throughout the game.

St Marks 16, White Mavs 13: It took overtime in Milford on Sunday to produce a winner as St Marks held on after a wild comeback by the White Mavs for the 16-13 victory. Kyle Good turned in his best game of the season and led the White Mavs in scoring and rebounds. Jack Lydon and Sam Eppers were all over the court and had strong defensive games and helped out on the glass. Jack Mulligan defended the St Marks big men well and started the White Mavs comeback with some strong inside baskets. Jack Kuligowski, Charlie Eppers and Max Wrage held the St Marks guards scoreless in the second half with smothering defense. Patrick Oberstadt was solid on both ends of the court, while Kyle Sullivan had a last second tying three pointer go in and out as the buzzer sounded.

AdvisersTrust.com Bullets 32, Vikings 16: JP Iaropoli and John Godino combined for 10 points for the Bullets. Stephen Oberstadt led the offense with 4 assists. Quinn McAndrews had 5 steals and Miles Ricks had 8 boards to lead the defense. Thomas Armstrong and Stephen Dooley combined for 12 points for the Vikings, while Kyle Godfrey had 3 assists to lead the offense. Christopher Beal was all over the court with 5 steals on defense and Will Archiere swept the boards with 8 rebounds.

Green Goblins 32, Spartans 20: Patrick Grover and Max Wrage combined for 18 points for the Goblins, while Max Bloomquist manned the point and had 3 assists. Kyle Sullivan had 5 steals on defense and Owen Meeker had 7 boards. Riley Ward and Kevin Gong combined for 10 points to lead the Spartans. Preston Bliss-Martinez led the offense with 4 assists, while Stephen Vournazo had 5 steals and Elias Enriquez had 8 rebounds.

Tigers 42, Wolves 20: For the Tigers, Jared Dunn and Justin DeThomas combined for 25 points. Atilla Sepkin had 4 assists from the point. Andrew Tomasino had 4 steals and Justin Engler had 9 rebounds on defense. Bryce Benson and Will Swierbut combined for 10 points for the Wolves. Michael Brown had 3 assists. On defense Kevin Curry had 5 steals, while Jack Kuligowski had 7 boards.

 Tarheels 41, Green Hornets 19: Jack Mulligan and Devin O’Connell combined for 30 points to lead the Tarheels, while Sean Roche chipped in with 3 assists. Marlon Medina had 4 steals for the defense and Robert Hetzer had 7 rebounds. For the Green Hornets, Nick Kalra and Luke Azzarito combined for 17 points. James Tibolla distributed the ball well with 3 assists. Thomas Daigle had 3 steals and Ryan McNerney had 7 boards on defense.

Grade 5

Brookfield 23 Mavericks 17: Mavericks played a spirited game. They fell behind early by eight points, the team managed to rally with good ball movement and tremendous defense and rebounding, tying the game at 16, but ran out of steam and fell short late in the fourth quarter. Derrick Lewis scored 4, Tucker Garrity 4, Ben Futterman, Gavin Connors, Harry Lucas and Thomas Luciano each added a bucket, while Luke Fischer dropped a silky free throw to round out the scoring. Tucker Garrity added a whopping 9 boards and 3 steals.

Monroe 37 Mavericks 23: Mavericks fell behind early in this contest as well, but also showed a lot of fight and spirit. Jack Hannan led the way with 7, while Tucker Garrity and Thomas Luciano added 6 each. Harry Lucas and Ryan Burns also added a bucket a piece. Jack Hannan had 4 rebounds and Garrett Norberg added 3.

Newtown 57, Madison 40: Newtown jumped out to an early 13-6 lead and never looked back behind intense full court pressure and smooth transition offense. The offense was led by Robert Disibio and Luke Barrett. The duo combined for 35 points, with Disibio netting 22 and Barrett 13. Dan Mason, Bryan Vander Have and Jimmy Davies chipped in with 7, 6 and 6 points each, respectively. Solid all-around play was received from Griffin Cross, James Doyle, Luke Melillo, Aidan Moulder and Todd Petersen.

Adviserstrust.com Knicks 43 Red Devils 25: For the Knicks, Garrett and Ben Futterman each scored 8 points. Garrett Mandarano had 5 assists, Nick Accousti had 6 steals and Jonathan Nahmias had 8 rebounds. For the Devils, Andreas Nottelman and Thomas Usher combined for 15 points. Ayden Kasbarian directed the offense from the point, while Thomas Murray shone on defense with 5 steals and Will Hampford had 8 Boards.

Orangemen 24, Shooting Stars 21: Trevor Tyrell and Jack Sullivan combined for 16 points for the Orangemen. Chris Maturo led the offense with 3 assists, while Ty Dickinson had 4 steals to key the defensive effort and Easton Ricks had 8 rebounds. The Stars were led by the scoring of jack Clark and Charlie Asetta who combined for 11 points. Timmy MaCarthy had 3 assists, while and Robbie Morrill led the way on defense with 5 steals and Alex Budd had 8 rebounds.

The Hawks 30, Blue Blazers 20: For the Hawks, Jacob Clements and Harry Lucas combined for 12 points, while Chris Venezia had 3 assists, Harvey Long led the defense with 4 steals and Connor Hughes had 7 rebounds. For the Blazers, Luke Fischer and Jack Hannan combined for 10 points, while Ryan Burns had 3 assists, Ryan Straiton had 5 steals, and Kyle Cascone had 8 rebounds

Grade 6

Hot Shots 29, Buckateers 25: The Hot Shots we able to establish an early lead and held off the Buckateers in the final quarter for the victory. Kent Mullen led the way with 8 points, followed by Tristian Crone (4), Jack Murray (4) and Greg Brissette (6). Jack Murray continued his great rebounding while Brendan O’Hara’s speed was able to thwart countless fast breaks from the Buckateers. Harry Eppers led all scorers for the Buckateers with a season high 16 points. Max Goldstein, Travis Huzina, Mathew Menousek and Sam Parsons combined for 9 pts. Tom Fitzgerald had 5 rebounds and a blocked shot in the game. Cameron Champagne and Goldstein also had 3 assists

Celtics 20, Swishers 16: Each team held their opponent to season lows in scoring. Leading the Celtic’s offense was Cole Demirjian , while the C’s defense was led by Alex Street. When Demirjian was not pulling up for shots at the elbow, he was driving the lane and making no look dishes to his big men. Connor Dinallo hustled all over the court and Grant Moxham had 5 points and 5 rebounds for the Swishers. John Payne had 4 rebounds and Ryan Williams had two blocks. The game was kept close by the strong defense of Justin Woodard and the clutch free throw shooting of Ryan Mailloux.

Sox 30, Advisory Trust.com Doughnuts 22: David Kohler and Mark Chernoff led the scoring for the Sox with David getting a double double with 16 points and 18 rebounds. Aidan Ford scored 10 points for the Doughnuts, with contributions from James Heran and James Doutney. Kyle Gaynor played strong under the boards.

Thunder 28, Tornadoes 22: This relatively low scoring game against two well-matched teams illustrated the importance of executing a strong defense, boxing out and controlling rebounds. Eugene Citrano led all scorers with 11 points followed by Adam Farley (8), Alex Janiak (4), Matt Sadowski (4) and Kai Toomey (1). Alex Janiak led all rebounders with 5 followed by Matthew Sadowski (2), Kenny Malin (2) and Eugene Citrano (1). Jack Carello, Kevin Reiss and E.J. Santayana played strong defense and set a number of key picks that enabled their teammates to score. Shot after shot rolled off the rim for the Tornadoes as they could only manage 4 points in the first half. John Finnegan, Rhett Saunders, Brian Montoya and Adam Wolff paced the Tornadoes offense, while Kevin Riccardi and Bobby Ward hit the boards hard.

Invaders 44, Sox 39: The Invaders were able to fend off the feisty Sox after building a third quarter lead of 16 points to extend a four-game winning streak. Ethan Aug (16) and Jack Miller (13) led the offense. Tyler Gaynor and Ben Harrison led the defense. Michael Arthur and Dino Vogziatis played well on both sides of the court. For the Sox, Dylan Sock exploded with 13 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter and David Kohler added 16.

Monstars 31, Hot Shots 25: The Monstars were led on offense by Tom Coppinger and Ryan Patrick. The defensive front was held strong by Anthony Isabella and Matt Buzzi. Jake Duffy pulled down 12 rebounds in the Monstars fourth win of the season. Again, Greg Brissette led the Hot Shots with 11 points as Kent Mullen added 8 and Tristian Crone 4. Sterling Radacsi was great on the defensive side of the ball. PJ Pfeiffer, Nate Jones and Michael Narducci were tough on the boards.

Thunder 48, Celtics 30: Crisp passing, strong ball handling, and good rebounding were key to this impressive victory. League leading point scorer Eugene Citrano led all scorers with 19 points, followed by Alex Janiak (10), Matthew Sadowski (8), Kai Toomey (4), Adam Farley (4), Kevin Reiss (2) and Kenny Malin (1). Defensively the boys combined for 14 rebounds. Alex Janiak led all rebounders with 10, followed by Adam Farley (2), Kai Toomey (1) and Jack Buchler (1). The boys also had a season high 10 key steals. Jack Carello, E.J. Santayana and Kevin Reiss played strong defense with good boxing out and set a number of key picks that enabled their teammates to score. The Celtics kept the game close against the high scoring opponent midway through the third quarter when the Thunder broke open the game with a 12 point run and eventual easy win. To the Celtic’s credit, they did not give up and worked hard in the second half, but could not erase the deficit. The Celtic’s offense was led by David Daria who pumped in 12 points and had 4 assists, while the C’s defense was led by Owen Rahr with 7 boards, 3 blocks and 3 steals.

Blackhawks 34, Doughnuts 17: For the Black Hawks, Thomas Skrelja and Robert Murray led the offense with 10 points each. The Black Hawks had a great defensive effort led by Doug Carriero 3 steals, Thomas Skrelja 3 steals and with the entire team contributing, including Zack DeMeglio, Ricky Mariani, Evan Landgrebe, Jack Ciaramello and Jermane Anyoha. Point guards Ben Terry and Wally Skrelja did a great job running the offense and defending against the Doughnuts speedy backcourt.

Newtown 34, Southbury 25: Ryan Kost and Nick Weiland showed Southbury who’s boss with moves that quickly set Newtown up to look back. Evan Eggleston’s early foul trouble was worth the effort, and Liam Deakin and Ryan Escoda were relentless on press. Newtown owned the rebounds with Erwin Grewal, Silas Decker and Jake Perone, but the elusive shot kept the score low. Kyle Roche continues to have hot hands, strong plays and cool moves, leading the team past three-point phenoms of Southbury.

Newtown 58, Danbury 38: Newtown had it all going on offensively and defensively facing the Danbury squad. Erwin Grewal and Ryan Kost were rebel rebounders and sunk made-for-TV shots, leading the team with 11 points each. Nick Weiland’s ricochet moves netted him 10, and Kyle Roche, Jake Perone and Adam Bergeron were scary good, with moves that plowed through the paint and found the swoosh. The winning talent was spread throughout the talented squad of Escoda, Eggleston, Deakin and Decker for the win, and these tough guys hope for the same success down county next week.

Grade 7

Newtown 66, Brookfield 31: Hayes Kelchner was the force offensively and on the boards delivering 26 points and 15 rebounds for Newtown. Newtown took a commanding lead in the second quarter with tough team defense by Mitch Savoka who had 4 steals, holding Brookfield to just 1 bucket. Ben Mason worked the offensive rebounds putting in 10 points. Jack Moulder fed his teammates all game leading the team in assists with 7.

Newtown 52, New Canaan 64: Bobby Haskins led Newtown with 14 points and 7 rebounds. Jack Lavelle was all over the court contributing 10 points, 2 steals and a big blocked shot. Ben Mason added 9 points. Connor Barrett hit a 3 pointer and had 7 points but it was not enough to keep pace with New Canaan. Dillon Abate and Mike Peli played strong games for the opponents.

Newtown Mavericks 37, Wilton 35: The Newtown Mavericks’ Will Huegi picked an opportune time for his five points, a fourth quarter 3-pointer, then a layup off a steal to take the lead for good against Wilton Blue’s 7th grade team at the Newtown Youth Academy. Gavin Stubbs netted 6 points and Andrew Lee had a game high 9 points, while Sam Grossano (5 points) and Tommy Kitzmiller controlled the ball well on the perimeter versus Wilton’s zone defense. Solid full court pressure led the Mavs attack. Brian Flood (2 points) was strong under the boards in the victory.

Newtown Mavericks 37, Fairfield PAL Hoyas 38: Sunday, Newtown Mavericks lost by one to Fairfield PAL Hoyas despite outscoring their opponent 10-4 in a fourth quarter comeback. Austin Engler, Andrew Lee, Jason Hebner, Connery Mayer, Michael Liberante and Sam Grossano each had 4 points in the close contest. Gavin Stubbs scored 11 points and contributed key rebounds and blocks but ultimately could not contain the strong play by the Hoyas center.

Grades 7-8

Celtics 48, Wolfpack 34: The Celtics started the second half of the season with another team effort, each Celtic player contributed offensively and defensively in the 49-34 victory. The game was evenly played for the first-half until the Celtics dropped in six unanswered points with less than a minute to play in the first-half to open an eight-point halftime lead. The Celtics started the second half as they finished the first half on a 10-0 run. Overall the most impressive static for the Celtics was assisted points; the team effectively passed, distributed and controlled the ball to secure the win. Joe Duero had his first double double, scoring a season high 17 points along with 10 rebounds. John Pierce and Jake Courchene collectively pulled down 12 rebounds. The Celtic backcourt added 27 points; James Carney (7 points), Will Corbett (6 points), Colin McCafferty (6 points), Steven Faxlanger (6 points) and Jack Riley (3 points). Austin Kasbarian led the Wolfpack scoring with 12 points, while Jack Procaccini and Jimmy Buck combined for 15. Justin Gillespie chip in with 4 points chased down several loose balls and played solid defense throughout the game.

Eyes on the Prize 58, Alpacas 38: Eyes on the prize won 58-33 behind a strong team effort...Dylan Tyrrell led the charge with 24 points and 13 rebounds, Sam Duffy added 15 points, 2 assists, and 2 steals, while Elliott Bennett controlled the paint with 8 points and 9 rebounds, and Steven Moccio had a great all-around game with 7 points, 8 assists, 10 rebounds and 5 steals.Will Ballard, Hunter Booker, Robert Lombardo, Nick Lombardo and Andrew Ross combined for 4 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 5 steals. Owen McInerney led the Alpaca scoring with 9 points. Josh Houle, Owen Samson and Jacob Meenan had good games in support.

Huskies 62, Cushman & Wakefield Fury 44: The Huskies continued their offensive dominance with a balanced attack by Hunter Cobb, Sam Czel and Tm Vander Have combining for 42 points. A great defensive effort by Brad Capeci and Markus Wessel controlling the boards with 10 rebounds and 6 points. Devin Luzietti led the fury with a season high 23 points, including a long 3-pointer at the buzzer. Gordon Walsh scored 11 points after shooting 2 for 4 from downtown and 3 for 3 from the free throw line. Tommy Elliott, Nick Venezia, Ryan Brello and Peter Clifford combined for 10 points. Andrew Janco played great defensively.

Raymond James Financial Newtown Celtics 50 - Cool Running 44: Close win by the Newtown Celtics over the always tough Cool Runnings. The men in green used their speed and tenacious defense to overcome the physical play of Cool Running. Leading scorer was Chris Thanasoulis with 18, and the leading rebounder and the game MVP was Forest Weatherby with 16 rebounds. Strong performances by Baddessi, Bucci and Gavel helped cement the victory. The offense was led by Dave Anderson, Jake Oliger and Henry Primavera combining for 35 points. Ryan Norton and Ryan Marron were defensive and rebounding leaders for Cool Runnings.

Raymond James Financial Lockouts 44, Murphy Basketball Camp Da Bulls 35: The Raymond James Financial Lockouts played a strong game led by Matt Elias, Dylan Kretz and Patrick Briscoe with 16, 8 and 6 points, respectively. Murphy Basketball Camp Da Bulls put up a good game led by Declan Sullivan and Shawn McCarthy with 22 and 5 points.

Big Dogs 47, Lovino Brothers Thunderbirds 29: The Big Dogs offense was led by Jack Phelps (15 points) under the boards and Jerl Draper (10 points) from the outside. Colin Patrick (8 points) and Patrick Godino (6 points) were solid. James Accousti was a very strong setup man, driving the offense with 4 points. Will LeMay and Thomas Stanczyk commanded the defense and also scored 2 points each. For the Thunderbirds, Sean Dalton, Austin Digna, and Lucas LaDestro played with great effort.

Thunder 58, CTS Micro Bulldogs 25: Thunder was led by strong offense from Austin DeSouza (24 points) and Matt Davis (12 points) with Owen Gray dishing off many key assists. Austin Bliss-Martinez, Spencer Tolson and Bryan Kiley all provided excellent guard play, Trystan Wagner and Evan Cerreta were strong on defense with Chris Mok and Dan McCarthy stealing the ball on a number of occasions to set up the fast-break offense. Nick Bourgeois led the CTS Micro Bulldogs with 12 points and Liam Palilla with 7 points. Matt Frazzetta led the team with 8 rebounds and Ben Dieckman led the team with 3 steals. Mark Zavatsky, Bryan Silk and Max Weber played solid defense.

Wolverines 44, Grizzlies 36: The Wolverines took an early lead and never looked back. Mathew Kretz and Adam Weber artfully directed the offense. RH Clark fought hard in the paint. Kevin Finnegan had an impressive performance. He controlled the game in the second half and iced the victory at the free throw line. The Grizzlies offense was led by Spenser Johnson and Keiran Lynch who had 16 and 12, respectively. Scott Martin and Matt Campbell played tough “D” and controlled the boards in the second half. Taylor Koonz was also a defensive standout for the Grizzlies.

Alpacas 41, Cool Running 36: The Alpacas pulled ahead of Cool Runnings thanks to Chad Azzarita’s 5 points to close out the final four minutes of the game. The Alpacas scoring was paced by Owen McInerney and Josh Houle, who combined for 24 points. Kyle Keeping and Adam Bell played well on defense. Charlie Fletcher and Jake Oliger led the attack on offense. Colin Parker and Matt Kugler played terrific defense and pulled down 6 rebounds apiece.

Cushman & Wakefield Fury 60, Big Dogs 56: The Fury shot a season high 61 percent led by Devin Luzietti with 15 points. He also had a huge game on the boards hauling down 27 rebounds and blocking 5 shots. Tommy Elliott added 11 points as did Gordon Walsh who has knocked down at least one 3-pointer in each of his last five games. Mitchell Long and Peter Clifford scored 6 points each. Nick Venezia, Ryan Brello, Andrew Janco and Colby Olson combined for another 11 points. Venezia also dished out 5 assists in the game. The Big Dogs played a hard fought game but came up just short, the offense was led by James Accousti, Colin Patrick, Jack Phelps and Alex Dunleavy with 15, 15, 14 and 8 points, respectively. Patrick Godino and Will LeMay had strong assists with 2 points each. Defensively the team was led by Thomas Stanczyk, Tyler LaCroce and Paul Whitaker.

Wolverines 34, CTS Micro Bulldogs 22: A strong defensive stand was led by Mathew Ingwersen. Stephen Brittin was unstoppable inside and went coast to coast on break-away points twice. Kevin Arther added important baskets with a sweet outside shot. Liam Palilla led the CTS Micro Bulldogs with 9 points and Connor Flint with 5 points. Matt Krasnickas led the team with 7 rebounds and Philip Coffey led the team with 4 takeaways. Matt Frazzetta, Ben Dieckman and Nick Bourgeois anchored the defense.

Huskies 47, Eyes on the Prize 44: The Huskies rebounded from a first-half deficit of 18 points to secure the win from the previously undefeated Eyes on the Prize. The Huskies were led by Sam Czel with 22 points. Hunter Cobb, Robert Katrinak, Markus Wessel and Tim Vander Have rounded out the scoring with 25 points. Great defense by Jacob Steinbrey and Eric Mockovack. Eyes on the Prize lost their first game. Dylan Tyrrell had a supreme effort with 23 points and 13 rebounds, Sam Duffy had 8 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists, Elliott Bennett had 6 points and 3 rebounds, and Steven Moccio chipped in with 5 points, 10 rebounds, 8 assists, and 4 steals.

Grade 8

Newtown 65, Westport 49: Newtown eventually wore down a short-handed but game Westport squad. Mason Melillo had the hot hand from the outside, burying four 3-pointers as part of his game high 16 points. Matt Gerics and Ryan Shaw each scored 10, while Dillon Palumbo added 8.

Newtown 73, Shelton 48: Newtown jumped out to a 25-6 lead after one quarter and never looked back as they tallied their highest point total of the season. Matt Gerics and Ethan Carpenter had several assists from the point and scored 13 and 8 points, respectively. Melillo again had the range from the outside, scoring 12. Andrew Svanda (10 points), Matt Maturo (6 points) and Nick Samuelson (4 points) controlled the boards on both ends of the floor. Finally, Geoff Santore was all over the court and scored a season-high 9 points.

Newtown 49, Easton 40: Newtown increased their win streak to five games with the victory. Shaw dominated in the paint while scoring 13. Carpenter and Palumbo used a variety of moves to the basket and scored 8 apiece. Jamie Cochrane had several steals and scored 6 points.
