After spending the first half of their season learning about themselves and absorbing what it takes to be a basketball TEAM from coaches Steve Feinstein and Bob Elliott, the Newtown fifth-grade boys travel team seems to be getting it. The Hawks have won four out of their last five games, falling only to powerhouse St. Theresa.
Both coaches employ a patient and positive approach that is clearly paying dividends.
âThis is an extremely athletic and high energy group of kids and the biggest challenge has been getting them to slow down and to trust that their teammates are always close by to help out if they get in a jam,â said coach Feinstein. A recent change in substitution pattern has also produced tremendous defensive energy that has frustrated some of the top teams in the division.
According to coach Elliott, âThe new pattern provides fresh legs at predictable points in time; the boys know when they are going in and they know what they have to do.â
With a now even record at 7-7, the Hawks may be peaking just in time for a strong playoff run.
