Swim And Dive Team Defeats Rebels
The Newtown High School boys’ swimming and diving team defeated the host New Fairfield Rebels 91-75 on January 28. The Nighthawks sealed the win after the 100 yard backstroke race and exhibitioned the final two events.
New Fairfield had first-place finishes in eight of the events but Newtown’s depth made the difference.
The 200 yard medley relay team comprising Alex Gadbut, Johnny Barzetti, Duncan Kolb, and Jack Kolb was second in a time of 1:55.99. Finn Clancy was second in the 200 freestyle race in 2:02.74. Leo Van Straten was second in the 200 individual medley race in 2:16.00. Gadbut won the 50 free and Warren Ache was runner-up in the race with times of 24.75 and 25.36.
Trenton Story won the diving competition with a score of 130.85.
Barzetti gave Newtown a second-place outcome in the 100 butterfly in 1:01.08. Kolb was second in the 100 free in 56.99. Gadbut took second in the 500, making his final touch in 5:27.04.
Newtown went one-two in the 200 free relay. Elias Kolb, Kyle Albrecht, Duncan Kolb, and Van Straten came in first with a time of 1:43.93 and Jack Kelly, Clancy, Ache, and Barzetti took second in 1:45.02.
Oliver Clancy earned second in the 100 backstroke race with a time of 1:02.63. In the 100 breaststroke Van Straten had the fastest time clocking in at 1:10.74 and was followed by Duncan Kolb in 1:11.32. In the 400 free relay Finn Clancy, Sam Irving, Albrecht, and Oliver Clancy had the second-best time with a 4:01.83.
