Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multi-Purpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of The Commission on Aging. The center is run by Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For more information about programs offered at the Senior Center call 270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Wal-Mart Route 6). Cost is 65¢ each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip, 75¢ each way for out of town. Call 748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

 

This Week’s Programs

*AARP INCOME TAX ASSISTANCE available on Mondays only from February 5 through April 9, 9 am to noon by appointment only. Bring last year’s tax return and any other pertinent information. Call 270-4310 to set up an appointment.

*SOCIAL GATHERING — A friendly game of cards, socializations, current events…meet old friends, make new ones! First Tuesday (February 6) of every month between 4 and 6 pm. Casual “Pot Luck.” $3 per person. Call for information.

*CRAFT CLASS, February 6, at 1 pm; make a sponge painted valentine box.

*“LUNCH AND LEARN” Link to Life Personal Emergency Response and Fall Prevention Presentation on February 7 at 1 pm; snow date is February 13 at 1 pm. Sign up by February 1.

*BABY CONTEST FOR MARCH. Bring in your baby picture by the second week in February. We will have a contest in March to guess who’s picture is who.

*Join us every Wednesday at 10:30 am to make cards to send to the troops serving overseas.

AARP DRIVER SAFETY PROGRAM will be on Thursday and Friday, March 22–23 from 12:30 to 4:30 pm. Must attend both classes. The cost is $10 per person.

*Newtown Social Services will be taking heating applications for deliverable fuels for oil, propane, and kerosene. Assistance is for delivery until March. Call Ann Piccini at 270-4330 for more information or an application for Yankee Gas or CL&P.

*FOR WEATHER CLOSINGS, watch channel 3. The center will close if the Town of Newtown closes, although classes and lunch may be canceled.

Upcoming Trips

*Depart at 8:30 am on February 13 for Mohegan Sun, snow date is February 15, $26 per person.

*Wednesday, February 28,  at Westchester Dinner Theater see Nunsensations. Depart 9:30 am from the Senior Center. $71 per person.

*FUTURE TRIPS include a 3-day trip to Pennsylvania Dutch countryside and visit the King Tut exhibit, July 25–27; an 8-day tour of Scotland, August 22–30; and an Atlantic Canada Cruise September 3–8. Trip booklets are now available at the front desk.

Monday: February 5: Hearty beef stew, egg noodles, broccoli florets, seedless rye bread, seasonal fresh fruit;

Tuesday: February 6: Baked potato half with chicken, broccoli and cheese, diced carrots, soft breadstick, cranapple juice, pear slices;

Wednesday: Yankee pot roast with gravy, mashed potatoes, fresh zucchini squash, wheat dinner toll, pineapple tidbits;

Thursday: Vegetable barley soup, unsalted crackers, cold grilled chicken Caesar salad with croutons and Caesar dressing, butterscotch pudding with whipped topping.

Also, for planning ahead—

Monday: February 12: Closed for Lincoln’s Birthday;

Tuesday: February 13: Beef tips with mushroom gravy; parsley boiled potatoes; green peas, whole wheat bread, seasonal fresh fruit.

Tuesday: AM pinochle, country-western line dancing; PM Tai Chi & Chi Kung, walking for fitness, computer classes, crafts, Social Gathering.

Wednesday: AM exercise; PM Lunch and Learn, bingo, crafts.

Thursday: AM Breakfast Club, hatha yoga, cards; PM walking for fitness.
