Track Squads Compete In SWC Qualifier Meet
Newtown High School’s girls’ and boys’ indoor track and field teams competed in a South-West Conference qualifier meet at Bethel High on January 25 and recorded some impressive times and distances. The NHS coaches like what they are seeing out of their runners, jumpers, and throwers as the regular season gives way to the postseason (the SWC Championships will take place at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven on Saturday, February 8 starting at 5 pm).
“We are progressing well. We currently have 28 girls qualified for postseason and SWCs which is more than last year. We will be competing this weekend with the postseason runners in a final invitational before SWC and States. Unfortunately we’ve been hit hard this season with the sickness that’s going around but we are pushing through,” said Becky Bourret, coach of the Nighthawk girls.
“The boys’ team has come a long way since the start of the season. We have worked very hard to become a well balanced team that can do well in most of the events in indoor track and field. The coaches are very proud of the efforts of the team and look forward to continued success as well as progress,” Boys’ Coach Nick Fraticelli said.
