Three-Vehicle Crash

Three vehicles were damaged following a crash around 7:58 am, Thursday, January 21.

A 2016 Subaru Crosstrek Premium, operated by Alan J. Ritchie, 29, of Sandy Hook, was traveling eastbound on Berkshire Road.

Ahead of that, a 2005 Toyota Camry, operated by Cindy Cannato-Wahlberg, 61, of Sandy Hook, was slowing for traffic on Berkshire Road in the eastbound lane near Oakview Road.

A 2015 Ford Fusion, operated by Eliza Nicole Estes, 17, of Sandy Hook, had stopped for traffic in the eastbound travel lane of Berkshire Road.

Ritchie told police he was behind the Camry when he noticed the vehicle stopped. He said he could not stop the Subaru in time to avoid a collision with the Toyota.

Cannato-Wahlberg told police she was slowing for traffic when the rear of her vehicle was struck by the front of the Crosstrek. She stated the force of the impact pushed the front of the Camry into the rear of the Fusion.

The front of the Subaru, the front and rear of the Toyota, and the rear of the Ford were all damaged. None needed to be towed.

All three drivers and a passenger in the Toyota were wearing seat belts. No injuries were reported.

No enforcement action was taken.

Driving While Distracted

Police responded to a two-vehicle non-injury collision on South Main Street, near the intersection with Elm Drive, around 11:01 am, Saturday, January 23.

At the time, a 2013 Honda CR-V EX and a 2017 Honda Civic were both traveling south.

The CR-V, operated by Shea Murphy, 17, of Sandy Hook, stopped and signaled a left turn into a plaza.

The Civic, operated by John F. Blawie, 32, of Bridgewater, did not stop. The front end of the Civic hit the back end of the CR-V Civic.

Both drivers were wearing seat belts. No injuries were reported.

Both vehicles were towed from the scene.

Blawie was given a verbal warning for driving while distracted.

Following Too Close

Newtown police report a two-vehicle accident that damaged both vehicles, but did not injure anyone involved.

A 2013 Honda Civic EX was being operated by Zoe Renee Altis, 24, of Norwalk, east on Berkshire Road, near the intersection with Pole Bridge Road, around 12:01 pm, Saturday, January 23.

Jack Miller, 20, of Sandy Hook, was ahead of the Honda, operating a 2014 Lexus GS 320.

Miller activated the left turn signal on the Lexus, and stopped at the driveway access at 51 Berkshire Road to turn left.

The front end of the Honda struck the rear end of the Lexus. Both vehicles sustained minor damage; neither needed to be towed.

No injuries were reported for either driver, or for a passenger in the Honda. All were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.

Altis was given a verbal warning for following too close and causing an accident.

A schoolbus waits on the southern shoulder of Mile Hill Road after being involved in a collision at 12:41 pm Thursday, January 21. Newtown police report the schoolbus, owned by All-Star Transportation and being operated by Bethany K. Cruson, 36, of Newtown, made a left turn from Queen Street onto Mile Hill Road. A 2008 Toyota Highlander being operated by Earle L. Sims, 78, of Newtown, was traveling westbound on Mile Hill Road, when the bus pulled in front of him. Cruson told police she observed the clearly posted stop sign at the end of Queen Street. She believed there was enough space for her to make the turn safely, she said. The driver side of the bus, a 2019 Blue Bird BBCV3310S, was struck by the front of the Highlander. No injuries were reported to either driver, any of the ten passengers on the bus, or a passenger in the Highlander. Cruson was given a verbal warning for failure to stop at a stop sign. —Bee Photo, Hicks
