Facing A Shrinking Government
Facing A Shrinking Government
To the Editor:
Iâve heard from residents in Monroe and Newtown throughout the past several months who are worried about how the economic crisis will impact state and local government services. I completely understand their concern and identify with their personal struggles in these uncertain times, as well as their apprehension of potential cuts.
The state is facing a deficit of more than $900 million for the current fiscal year and more than $6 billion for the next two fiscal years. Towns will be impacted by any adjustments to municipal funding that will be made to help address this situation and legislative leaders and Governor Rell have publicly acknowledged the state must give serious consideration to shrinking a government that has grown too large for its citizens to afford. I invited the first selectmen of Monroe and Newtown to attend a roundtable at the state capitol prior to Governor Rellâs February 11 unveiling of her next budget proposal to discuss the stateâs fiscal problems and their corresponding impact on local budgets.
While the governor will introduce her proposal shortly, one should be aware that is only the start of the budget process. There will be months of discussions and negotiations before the legislature adjourns in early June, hopefully having approved a complete budget package. During this time, I pledge to be a strong advocate for our small towns and the need for fairness to all communities. The stateâs financial problems will not be quickly resolved. As always, I welcome input from constituents during this process.
Sincerely,
