Top Ranked Wrestlers Edged By Danbury; Hockey Team Falls To BBD
DANBURY — Newtown High School’s wrestling team went into the Danbury High School gymnasium ranked No. 1 in the Norwich Bulletin state coaches poll — already having beaten the Hatters in the Danbury Holiday Tournament back in December — but came up short, 30-25, in a head-to-head competition with the second-ranked Hatters, on January 28.
Newtown won five of 14 matches as Luca Crudo came out on top in the 113 pound division matchup, Joe Accousti won at 152, Connor LeMay prevailed at 160, Anthony Falbo won at 170, and Logan Walsh was victorious at 182.
The Nighthawks defeated Bethel in another January 28 competition on the mats, 69-9. Newtown lost just two of the bouts and came out on top via pin in six of the matchups.
On the ice, Newtown’s hockey team fell 5-1 to the Brookfield-Bethel-Danbury team at Danbury Ice Arena on January 28. Devin Marsh, assisted by Jack Hanley, gave the Nighthawks a 1-0 first-period lead before BBD reeled off five straight net-finders.
