Sixth Grade Boys Second In Tourney
Newtownâs sixth grade boysâ travel basketball team got to the championship round of the Ridgefield Tournament, and finished runner-up this past week. Tourney highlights are as follows:
Newtown won the tourney opener 32-30 over Mahopac, NY as Matt Gerics scored 8, Ethan Carpenter dropped in 6, Devin Luzietti 4, and Dillon Palumbo 3.
Newtown then routed Greenwich 47-14 as Newtown avenged a five-point loss from the first time these teams met. Jared Pearson led the way with 16 points and Jamie Cocharane had 8. Ethan Carpenter added 6, Dillon Palumbo 5, and Matt Gerics scored 4 and played great defense. Newtown lost to Mt Vernon 48-37. Jared Pearson had 14 points and Andrew Svanda scored 8 and controlled the boards. Devin Luzietti added 4 and Josh Houle and Joey Duero played strong defensive games.
Newtown was the fourth seed and faced undefeated and top-seeded Ridgefield and won 38-36 in a nail-biter game.
Jared Pearson had 8 points, Michael Doyle 7, and Ethan Carpenter and Matt Gerics, both with 6 points, were strong offensively. Devin Luzietti and Jamie Cochrane played strong defense and enabled Newtown to go to the championship game.
In the tourney finale, Newtown squared off with New Castle, NY on January 24 and fought back from a 10-point deficit at halftime but fell 41-36.
Jamie Cocharane and Jared Pearson both scored 8 points. Ethan Carpenter and Michael Doyle both scored 6. Devin Luzietti had 5 points. Newtown played its best basketball all year to earn second place.
