Girls’ Travel Team Second In Ridgefield Tourney

Newtown’s sixth grade girls’ travel basketball team continued its successful season by placing second in the Ridgefield Tournament this past weekend.

They went undefeated in their bracket then defeated host Ridgefield in a battle from the foul line. Newtown eventually succumbed to a strong team from Scarsdale, NY.

Haley Ryan and Lauren Wilcox led the team in scoring, while Maren Brady, Katie Reilly, and Kelly Merrick came up with rebounds against much taller opponents. Casey Harkins and Alana Murray set the tone on defense, setting impenetrable screens and stopping the best players from the other teams. Katie Mossbarger and Lindsey Hoyt contributed in the wins with tenacious defense and by moving the ball up the court. Caitlin Linden, fighting a stomach bug, came back big in the semis to work hard on defense.
