Clear Skies, Brother
Clear Skies, Brother
To the Editor:
It was with some sadness that I learned of the recent passing of Brendan Baker of Newtown. I never met Brendan, nor do I imagine he knew me, but I had envied him for some time.
You see, I once flew airplanes, at one time planning to become a professional pilot, even. But life takes strange twists, and I ended up in another field. But that love of flying never faded. As economics turned, my ability to continue to fly had fallen by the financial wayside.
Then one summerâs day I heard a buzz overhead, and to my surprise what turned out to be Mr Baker in his powered parachute floated by. And I was heartened. Perhaps I would not have to forsake the air forever after all. Brendan had found an affordable way into the air. Perhaps someday I could, too.
That path to the skies still eludes me for now, but the hope remains. And I am in his debt for that. Brendan was an aviator in one of the truest forms. He joined that brotherhood of fliers, and obviously liked what he found up there. And wherever you are now, Brendan, clear skies, brother, clear skies.
