HOM Students Creating A Copper Sculpture Installation
HOM Students Creating A Copper Sculpture Installation
By Eliza Hallabeck
Head Oâ Meadow students have been creating copper leaves at the school to become a permanent copper tree sculpture at the school.
The schoolwide project started on Monday, January 24, when Bruce Hunter and his wife Joanne Hunter, co-owners of the Art Spot on Route 7 in Danbury, visited the school. Along with their son, Alexander, the Hunters will walk each student, staff, and faculty member at Head Oâ Meadow through the process of creating copper leaves for the installation.
The project comes one year after the Art Spot helped the school create a tiled four-panel installation of Vincent van Goghâs âStarry Night.â
Both last yearâs project and this yearâs project are sponsored by the schoolâs PTA.
âWeâre making a big sculpture for your school,â Mrs Hunter said to a group of first graders.
Mrs Hunter showed students how to use a stylus to stencil over the image of a leaf on one side to create the impression of the leaf on a piece of copper connected to the paper.
âItâs fun,â said first grader Elena Shugru after she had completed her leaf.
Next to her, Philip Cappelli said he, too, was enjoying creating a copper leaf.
âI like it,â he said, âbecause it is a challenge to put the stylus down.â
Mrs Hunter said she expects the project to take one week to create.
âItâs really good,â said first grader Hana Kodzodziku, âbecause itâs cool.â
When explaining the project to a student, Mr Hunter said, âthe art comes in when we share an idea with you, and you make it your own.â
