Hawks Tap Depth, Swim Past Barlow-Immaculate 101-85
Newtown High Schoolâs boysâ swimming and diving team defeated the Joel Barlow-Immaculate co-op team 101-85 at NHS on January 19 and improved to 4-2 overall.
The Nighthawks handed the co-op swimmers their first loss of the season, after six straight wins, thanks to depth throughout the lineup overcoming first-place finishes in all but two events , led by Robby Harder who set three NHS pool records.
Newtownâs 400-yard freestyle relay team of Nick Lafky, Logan Mammen, George Delia, and Conor Donnelly earned first place by making their final touch in 3:42.51.
In the diving competition, Newtown earned a one-two-three finish, led by Maggie Korth, Sam Frietas, and Kaitlyn VosWinkle, respectively. Frietas joined Korth as a state tournament qualifier.
 Other top NHS finishes were as follows: Conor Donnelly, second in the 200 free, 1:56.66; and second in the 500 free, 5:13.67. Nick Lafky, second in the 200 individual medley, 2:14.26; and second in the 100 butterfly, 59:91. Dan Hufziger, second in the 50 free, 23.74; and second in the 100 free, 51.76. Rich Huffman, second in the 100 backstroke, 1:02.71; and third in the 200 IM, 2:16.83. Mike Lally, third in the 200 free, 2:15.41 Abben Hung, third in the 50 free, 24.29; and third in the 100 breaststroke, 1:06.56. George Delia, third in the 100 butterfly, 106.78; and third in the 500 free, 5:42.39. Sean Fahey, third in the 100 backstroke, 1:08.86.
The Nighthawks, following more than a week away from competition, are slated to return to action with a Friday, January 28 home meet against New Fairfield at 4 pm.
