Clinton A.    Hewitt

Clinton A. Hewitt, 85, husband of Natalie (Gleason) Hewitt of Housatonic Drive, Shady Rest, Sandy Hook, died January 21 in Waterbury Hospital.

Mr Hewitt was born in Queens, N.Y., on May 17, 1919, the oldest of six sons of the late Alfred and Ruth (Begbie) Hewitt. He spent summers as a child working on his aunt’s farm in the Purchase section of Southbury. It was there that he developed his love of horticulture and the Connecticut farming community. After a decorated four-year tour of duty in the US Army, European Theater, during World War II, he returned to Long Island, graduated from Farmingdale Agricultural College, and was married in 1947. He and his wife raised five children in Garden City, Long Island.

At the time of his death, Mr Hewitt was still active in his business career of supplying horticultural products, marketing strategies, and technical advice to garden centers throughout the New York Region.

In 1950 he purchased a summer cabin in the Shady Rest community in Sandy Hook. His family vacationed in Sandy Hook for the next 50 years, spending summers and long weekends at the cabin. In 1989 Clinton built a year-round home on the property and moved permanently to the riverfront community.

In addition to his wife of 57 years, survivors include three daughters, Natalie Hoeffel of Newtown, Nancy Hewitt of Ocala, Fla., and Ruth Wronski of Deerfield Beach, Fla.; two sons, Clinton Hewitt, Jr, of East Meadow, L.I., N.Y., and Drew Hewitt of Houston, Texas; one brother, Richard Hewitt of Florida; and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services were held January 27 in the Honan Funeral Home, Newtown.
