Children’s Events

*Valentine’s Day Craft: Children ages 6 and older may sign up for a Valentine Craft workshop conducted by Marie Walker on Saturday, February 5, from 1 to 2 pm. A $3 material fee is due upon registration.

Sign up in the Children’s Department.

*Children’s Story Time: Story hour registration for the next series of story times for children ages 2 to 5 will take place January 20-29.

Children must be at least 2 years old before the start of the session on February 7. Three classes are offered for 2-year-olds and their caregivers on Monday, Wednesday or Thursday morning from 10 to 10:30.

Classes for 3-5 year-olds are offered on Tuesdays from 11 to 11:45, and Wednesday and Thursday from 1 to 1:45.

Only Newtown residents are eligible for this free program.

Young Adults

*Creative Chocolates For Valentine’s Day: Chocolate lover Marie Walker will lead hands-on chocolate-making workshop for 12 students in grades 6 and up on Tuesday, February 1, from 3:30 to 5 pm (snow date is February 8). A $5 supply fee will be charged. Sign up at the Main Floor Circulation Desk or call 426-4533.

*Let’s Talk About: The next young adult “Let’s Talk About” book discussion is planned for Wednesday, February 16, from 4 to 5 pm.

Join the discussion of Gregor the Overlander by Suzanne Collins, a book about Gregor and his two-year old sister. The two find themselves pulled into a strange underground world where they trigger an epic battle involving men, bats, rats, cockroaches and spiders, while on a quest foretold by ancient prophecy.

Adult Programs

*Film Series: Come in from the cold and enjoy some first-run, award-winning independent films on Tuesday evenings at 7:30 pm.

On February 8 the Norwegian film Buddy will be shown. A vibrant young cast explores the true meaning of friendship and love in a heartwarming story about highjinks, crazy roommates and reality television.

Then on February 22, the library will show Light of My Eyes, which tells the story of a precarious romance between two people cast adrift in a lonely urban landscape. This film is in Italian with English subtitles.

*Book Discussions: Upcoming discussions include Van Martel’s Life of Pi on Thursday, February 17, at 7:30 pm; and Robert Olmstead’s A Trail of Heart’s Blood Wherever We Go on Monday, February 21, at 1 pm.
