Is There A ‘Shame-On-Us’ Mentality?
To the Editor:
The content of your character, Dr Martin Luther King. The content of our collective character, Newtown, for measure, now and then, here. For this letter, character is defined as positive, personal, recognizable qualities, particularly for defining behavioral traits as guided by conscience, determined generally by accepted standards, distinguishing qualities.
Newtown has been regarded well enough all these years to qualify as a good place to live, to work, to raise a family. Caring, dedicated people, smart, farsighted planners, committed individuals, and organizations strove to make the Town just that, a good place with lots of good character, good living. My experience here has been exemplary and I believe life here will remain so for all if we are careful.
So I am disturbed that our elected Board of Education saw fit to initiate an “outside” philosophy, a resolution to foster awareness of diversity, equity, and inclusion, warranted the hiring of a director full time for the initiation of such a program. Is there a “shame-on-us” mentality?” There should not be such.
The article in The Newtown Bee, pages 1 and 9, 1-14-22 edition, states developing a systemic advisory team to provide oversight. Who will be on the team? Who will be the judge or judges, the jury, the paper and computer handlers, the overseers? What will the penalties be, how will they be administered?
Bad vibrations. An anonymous alert app figures in too. Who keeps score? It reads like American Marxism. Not in our town of good character.
