Fashions Reveal ‘All That Glitters’ Onstage At Fundraiser

By Kendra Bobowick

Footlights reflected off sequined patterns, rosebuds stood out against dark, double-breasted lapels and pin striping, and girls twirled with arms out and hair flying at a pre-prom fashion show Saturday evening at Newtown High School.

Peer Leadership students launched the fashion and fundraising idea derived from a television show involving a similar theme.

Advisor Jeffrey Tolson said, “This was their project and we supported them. It was amazing, they did everything themselves.”

He explained that, “It’s typical of Peer Leadership to raise money,” and proceeds from the fashion show will go toward Kevin’s Community Center. The center, which provides free medical care for those in need, was founded in 2003 by Dr Michael Taweh in memory of his son, Kevin. The Newtown facility offers free medical care for residents age 16 and older who have no medical insurance.

Mr Tolson gives students credit in selecting a recipient for ticket sales, saying the community center “was the first thing that came to mind.”

Student Natalie Clavette said, “Peer Leadership does a lot of community fundraisers and community service.” She also admitted “TV gave us the idea” for a fashion show.

Students also received support from the community, including fashion contributions from Julie Allen Bridals and Styles in Newtown, which made available the women’s attire. Men also received some pointers on what’s in and what not to wear. Cache and Savvy of Danbury had the fashion “models” strutting the runway in dark, three-piece dapper slacks, jackets, vests and button-down shirts. Ties and roses splashed color into the collage.

Julie Allen Bridals owner Melanie Mattegat was pleased to lend a hand to the high school students. In fact, one of her daughter’s friends was involved with Saturday’s show. Mrs Mattegat had another, pertinent connection to the fundraiser.

“Dr Taweh’s sister got married and she purchased her dress here. So this is our small way of giving back,” Mrs Mattegat said.

Much of her dress selection for the show included bridesmaids dresses that “double nicely as prom gowns,” she said.

The evening showcased the styles of Style in Newtown. Contributing to a silent auction were Safari Sunrise Tanning, Tre Ragazze, Hope and Faith on NBC, Villarinas, Nicholas Sparks, Angela Nastri, and Mary Clavette. Chris Nuelle and Scott Nichols built the runway and the tech team provided music, lighting and effects.

Kevin’s Community Center is at 31 Peck’s Lane in Newtown. The center is open Wednesdays from 1 to 5 pm; telephone 426-0496.
