With New England bracing for a blizzard, due to arrive by tonight, closing and cancellation notices are bound to be part of that process.
Readers, groups and individuals with events that will be affected due to the weather are encouraged to contact Bee Associate Editor Shannon Hicks with this information, which will be posted on The Bee’s website, Facebook page and Twitter feed. If you call the office once the storm if underway and the call goes to voicemail, please send an email. Messages left on the office answering machine at that point may not be checked until after the storm.
Owners of businesses that will be opening late or closing early are also welcome to contact Ms Hicks, who will also help get that word out.
Schools (including sporting events)
Newtown Public Schools announced last night that schools will be on an early dismissal schedule for Monday, January 26.
The district announced on Monday that all Newtown Public Schools will be closed Tuesday, January 27, due to the anticipated weather.
Meanwhile, the anticipated blizzard has caused several Newtown High School sporting events originally slated for Tuesday to be rescheduled a day in advance.
Both varsity basketball games — the girls at home against Bunnell of Stratford, and the boys at Bunnell — were moved to Thursday, January 29, at the same locations and times (7 pm). The gymnastics team’s scheduled visit to Pomperaug of Southbury was also switched to Thursday, with a start time of 6 pm.
The high school boys’ swimming and diving team had its meet at New Fairfield changed from Tuesday to Friday, January 30; start time remains 4 pm.
Boards & Commissions
Tonight’s Fairfield Hills Authority meeting has been cancelled.
All meetings of town boards and commissions planned for Monday, January 26 (which also included Commission on Aging, Newtown Youth & Family Services, Board of Fire Commissioners and a special Board of Selectmen meeting) have all been cancelled or postponed.
The Board of Selectmen special meeting has been rescheduled for Wednesday, January 28.
The Public Building & Site Commission meeting scheduled for Tuesday, January 27, has been postponed to Monday, February 2, at 7 pm. It will be held in the art room at Reed Intermediate School.
In addition, the Board of Education CIP/Facilities/Finance Committee meeting scheduled for tomorrow morning and the Conservation Commission meeting scheduled for tomorrow night have both been cancelled.
The Superintendent’s Forum at Newtown Senior Center, 14 Riverside Road, scheduled for Wednesday, January 28, has been postponed to Wednesday, February 4. The event will be hosted by Superintendent of Schools Joseph V. Erardi, Jr, and will run for approximately one hour. The community forum will start at 2:30 pm, at Newtown Senior Center, 14 Riverside Road, and all area seniors are encouraged by the district to attend.
Businesses & Organizations
Club NewFit, on Commerce Road, has announced it will today at 4 pm. The club will remain closed on Tuesday, January 27. Updates regarding the projected morning schedule for Wednesday, January 28, will be decided late Tuesday afternoon.
Avancé Day Spa will be closed Tuesday.
In anticipation of the snowy conditions, the Relay For Life-Newtown Planning Committee has decided to postpone the Kickoff Event originally scheduled for Wednesday, January 28, to its snow date of Thursday, January 29. The kick-off event is open to team captains, previous participans and anyone interested in joining the 2015 event. It will take place at LeReine’s Cuisine, 31 Pecks Lane (within the TierOne complex), from 6 to 8 pm.
C.H. Booth Library will be closing at 3 pm Monday and will remain closed all day Tuesday, January 27. Library Director Brenda McKinley told The Newtown Bee that overdue fines will not be charged for days the library is closed.
Newtown Municipal Center and all town offices will be closing at 3 pm Monday and will remained closed through Tuesday.
Newtown Parks & Recreation announced Monday afternoon that any programs or activities scheduled for the rest of the day have been cancelled.
