House Burglary

On or about January 9, someone forcibly entered a house on Lakeview Terrace and stole a small amount of cash, police report.

Police ask anyone who saw an suspicious activity in that area at that time to contact Patrol Officer Todd Dingee at the police station at 426-5841.

Purse/Keys Found

On January 18, a black leather purse containing a set of keys was found at the intersection of Mt Pleasant Road and Taunton Lane. Police are holding the items for safekeeping. The owner should contact Sergeant Darlene Froehlich at the police station, telephone 426-5841.

Chrysler Vs Nissan

About 7:30 pm January 14, motorist Kevin Herring, 17, of 33 Brookwood Drive, who was driving a 1998 Chrysler convertible, was making a left turn from Route 34 onto Wasserman Way, police said.

The Chrysler collided with a 1998 Nissan sedan on Wasserman Way, which was driven by Peter Verderosa, 62, of Stamford, police said. The Nissan had the right-of-way in the intersection, according to police.

There were no injuries. Police issued Herring an infraction ticket for failure to grant the right of way.

Intersection Collision

Police report that motorist Paul Corso, 64, of 8 Academy Lane, who was driving a 1999 Isuzu eastward on Mt Pleasant Road about 3:50 pm January 15, stopped for a red traffic signal at that road’s intersection with Hawleyville Road.

Eastbound motorist Paul Varga, 36, of 36 Old Hawleyville Road, who was driving a 2000 Chevrolet, attempted to stop, but slid on the wet roadway and struck the rear end of the Isuzu, police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued Varga a written warning for following too closely.

Moving Violations

Police report that on the afternoon of January 18, they set up a stationary radar-based speed patrol in a 25-mile-per-hour zone on Elm Drive and detected motorist Benjamin Tirigall, 20, of 11 Reservoir Road driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee 48 miles per hour there.

Police stopped Tirigall to investigate, after which they charged him with traveling too fast and with driving with a suspended license.

After posting $250 bail, Tirigall was released from police custody for arraignment on the charges on February 1 in Danbury Superior Court.

DUI Arrest

Early on the morning of January 21, motorist Dillon T. Dutton, 18, of Woodbury was spotted driving at high speed southward on Main Street, after which he made an erratic left turn onto eastbound Church Hill Road at the flagpole intersection, police said.

Police said they stopped Dutton near 46 Church Hill Road to investigate, after which they charged him with driving under the influence, possession of alcohol by an underage person, and improper travel through a traffic rotary.

Following arrest processing, police released Dutton on $100 bail for a February 6 court appearance.

DUI Incident

Police report that motorist Edward Gallagher, 35, of 81 Cedar Hill Road was driving a 2000 Jeep Cherokee southward on Main Street and traveling across the road’s center lines and entering the northbound lane early on the morning of January 20. Police said they stopped Gallagher to investigate.

Police charged Gallagher with driving under the influence and with a travel lane violation.

After he posted $100 bail, police released Gallagher for a January 31 court appearance.

Icy Conditions

About 7:15 pm January 18, motorist Herman Davenport, 58, of 4 Phyllis Lane, who was driving a 2004 Toyota Camry southward on Orchard Hill Road, attempted to brake near its intersection with Platts Hill Road, but encountered icy conditions, skidded across the roadway and traveled down an embankment, police said.

Davenport was not injured. Police took no enforcement.

SUV Vs Deer

About 6:50 am January 17, motorist Jonathan Abend, 36, of Bethel, who was driving a 2000 Dodge Durango eastward on Sugar Street, near its intersection with Key Rock Road, encountered a deer that had run onto the road, police said.

The Dodge and the deer collided, resulting in the deer’s death, police said. Abend was not injured. Police took no enforcement.

Snowy Road

Motorist David Devee, 52, of New Milford, who was driving a 1995 Infiniti G-20 sedan, was traveling northward on a snow-covered Boggs Hill Road about 6:17 pm on January 18, when while on a curve in the road, he drove off the right road shoulder and struck a tree, police said.

The accident occurred near 117 Boggs Hill Road. Devee was not injured. Police issued him a written warning for making a restricted turn.

Poverty Hollow

Motorist Darren Southard, 33, of Southbury was driving a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck northward near 115 Poverty Hollow Road about 10:20 pm January 18, when a deer entered the road, police said.

The truck and the deer collided. Southard was not injured. Police took no enforcement.

Mile Hill Road

About 1:15 am January 21, motorist William Petrey, 26, of Portland, who was driving a 1995 Eagle Talon sedan eastward on Mile Hill Road, braked sharply, went into a skid, hit some guardrailing and then went across the intersection of Mile Hill Road and Mile Hill Road South, after which his auto came to rest off the road, police said.

Police said Petrey told them he had encountered ice on the road. Police said they found no ice on the road. Petrey was not injured in the mishap. Police issued Petrey an infraction for making a restricted turn.

Great Quarter Collision

Police report that at about 7:30 am January 18, motorist Jerrold Milks, 40, of 169 Great Quarter Road was driving a 2006 Chevrolet Avalanche pickup truck on Great Quarter Road.

At that time, motorist Debbie Isabella, 41, of 48 Great Quarter Road, was driving a 2005 Toyota Sienna minivan there in the opposite direction.

The two vehicles were approaching one another on the narrow, winding Great Quarter Road about 500 feet north of that street's intersection with Loveland Drive, police said.

As they passed one another, the two vehicles' left, exterior rear-view mirrors collided. There were no injuries. Police took no enforcement.

DUI Incident

Police report they responded to a minor one-vehicle accident about 4 pm January 22 at 259 South Main Street, in which Odd Gjerstad, 70, of Danbury was the driver. Gjerstad was not injured, police said.

After investigating, police charged Gjerstad with driving under the influence and with failure to drive to the right. After processing, police released Gjerstad on $100 bail for a February 6 court appearance.

Buick Vs Chevrolet

About 4 pm January 23, motorist Elizabeth Dyer, 25, of 2 The Old Road, who was driving a 1993 Buick Regal northward on Taunton Lane, stopped at a stop sign at that street's intersection with Mt Pleasant Road, police said.

At that time, motorist Ryan Gorman, 26, of Ansonia, was driving a 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt eastward on Mt Pleasant Road and approaching the intersection, police said.

The Buick then started to make a left turn onto westbound Mt Pleasant Road, but collided with the approaching Chevrolet.

Ambulance volunteers checked both drivers for injuries, but both people refused medical attention, police said. Hawleyville firefighters responded to the accident.

Police issued Dyer an infraction ticket on a stop sign violation.

Congested Area

Police report a two-vehicle accident in the congested area of Church Hill Road near the Blue Colony Diner.

Motorist Sean Catterson, 39, of Phillipsburg, N.J., who was driving a 2005 Chevrolet truck westward on Church Hill Road about 7:30 am January 22, was attempting to make a left turn into a commercial driveway, when the truck collided with an eastbound 1993 Chevrolet sedan that was driven by Daniel Cartisano, 17, of Scenic View Drive, police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued Catterson an infraction ticket for making a restricted turn.

High School Theft

On January 23, police executed an arrest warrant against a person under age 16, charging the person with fifth-degree larceny. The crime involves the theft of items worth between $250 and $500.

Police said the arrest stems from multiple incidents of theft that occurred at a Newtown High School locker room in March 2006.

Last August, police arrested another unidentified person on theft, conspiracy, and criminal liability charges stemming from the same March 2006 incidents. Those charges involved the theft of between $500 and $1,000 worth of goods.

After processing on January 23, police released the arrested youth on a written promise to appear February 5 in Danbury Juvenile Court.

Because those arrested in the case are both under age 18, their identities are shielded by state law.

GMC Safari

About 6:16 pm January 18, motorist Zachary Klein, 17, of 33 Russett Road was driving a 1996 GMC Safari northward on a snowy, icy Gelding Hill Road, police said.

The GMC slid on the road and then struck a stone wall, becoming stuck on it, police said. Klein was not injured. Police verbally warned him for making a restricted turn.

Button Shop Road

About 6:11 pm January 18, motorist John Mesko, 45, of 12 Surrey Trail was driving a 2003 Toyota Matrix westward on a snowy Button Shop Road, when the vehicle went out of control and struck a tree along the right side of the road, police said. Mesko was not injured. Police issued him a written warning for traveling too fast for conditions.

Church Hill DUI

Police said they received a 911 telephone call on the night of January 24, concerning an erratic driver on Church Hill Road. The caller reported that the driver had pulled into a commercial parking lot at 30 Church Hill Road.

Police said they went to the area and located the motorist, after which they gave him field sobriety tests. Police charged the driver, Thomas Wendel, 52, of Danbury, with driving under the influence.

After processing, police released Wendel on $50 bail for a February 7 appearance at Danbury Superior Court.
