Girl Scouts And DAR Help Servicemen

Members of the Roger Sherman Chapter, DAR of New Milford, continue to offer assistance to wounded to service members  through the Wounded Warrior Ministry Center by striving to bring items of comfort from home. Their latest endeavor was achieved by purchasing 12 cases of Girl Scout Cookies from Troop 764 of Newtown. The cookies will be sent to wounded servicemen and women who are recovering from their injuries at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany.

The girls will use the proceeds from their cookie sale primarily for two events. One is a fun trip to New York City with a guided tour of Central Park.

The other is to finance their American Patriotism Interest Project Workshop that they will offer to Junior Girl Scouts who are bridging up to Cadet Girl Scouts this spring. Troop 764 will incorporate American history facts as well as American flag facts such as demonstration on how to display, hoist and lower, fold and retire the flag.

They will collect flags from the community and hold a flag retirement ceremony at the annual spring encampment for the Newtown Girl Scouts. They will also be able to offer the flag fact booklets provided by the Roger Sherman Chapter DAR to every girl who attends the workshop.

The Wounded Warrior Ministry Center serves an average of 780 patients per month. The Wounded Warrior Fund also supports the ministry of the chaplain who cares for the outpatients housed at Kleber Barracks located about 12 miles from the hospital.

Organizations, corporations, families, or individuals who are interested in donating gifts or funds to the Wounded Warrior Ministry Center can send donations directly to: Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, ATTN: MCEUL-CH/Chaplains Office, CMR 402, APO AE 09180, or call Marcella Martin, DAR Service Veterans/DAR Project Patriot Chair, 860-354-5649 for a list of items needed by the wounded soldiers.
