The Newtown Nighthawks Winter Guard will present its tenth annual Winter Guard show, âWinter Extravaganzaâ on January 27 at Newtown High School. Twenty-six color guard teams will compete in five classes, which are ranked by difficulty of routine.

Seven classes of guards will compete in Saturdayâs show. The Newtown Winter Guard has teams competing in three classes; Junior, AAA and Scholastic A. Winter Guard is referred to as the âSport of the Arts,â as it combines elements of music, dance, and militarylike precision.
The guard teams are judged on Use of Equipment, Movement, Ensemble, Analysis, and General Effect. Winter Guard is an international sport, with guards in ten countries.
The Newtown Varsity Guard (Scholastic A) will compete in the Winter Guard International (WGI) Color Guard World Championships in Dayton, Ohio, in April.
