On Saturday, January 31, the Torpedoes will hold their second annual Swim-A-Thon at Newtown High School from 1 to 5 pm.

Last year approximately 85 members of the Newtown Parks & Recreation swim team participated in the inaugural event. Together team members swam for a total of four hours, completing more than 11,300 lengths of the Newtown High School pool.

By collecting donations and pledges, they raised more than $27,000. All of the money raised went to Newtown Scholarship Association to support The Daniel Barden Newtown Torpedo Scholarship.

The scholarship will continue to be given every year to a graduating Newtown High School swimmer in memory of Daniel Barden, a Torpedoes teammate who died on 12/14.

Money raised from this year’s Swim-A-Thon will support the scholarship, as well as the present and future needs of the team.
