Several Newtown sporting events — both in and out of town — scheduled for Saturday, January 24, have been canceled because of the expected snowstorm. 

Newtown High School’s grapplers were scheduled to participate in the Gene Brigham Invitational Wrestling Tournament in Minisink, N.Y., on Saturday, but the meet was pushed to Sunday, January 25. The high school cheerleading team also had its event moved a day. The cheerleaders will now participate in the Connecticut Cheer Classic, in Wolcott, on Sunday.

The Southern Connecticut Conference Coaches Invitational track meet, originally slated to take place at Hillhouse High School in New Haven, has been postponed with no makeup date announced. Saturday’s Newtown High hockey game against Wethersfield-Rocky Hill-Middletown at Danbury Ice Arena has been postponed to a date to be determined.

Additionally, with school buildings closed, youth sporting events, including all Newtown Youth Basketball Association (NYBA) games, are on hold. The NYBA’s Coaches/Officials vs Cancer fundraising efforts, as part of a day of hoops in town, has been rescheduled for Saturday, January 31.
