Hit Stop Sign

Newtown Police report James Widmann, 66, of Newtown, operating a 2018 Ram 2500, was traveling southbound in the parking lot of 6 Queen Street at 5:46 pm January 3. While attempting to make a right turn from a stop sign, Widmann drove over the curb, knocking over the stop sign.

No injuries were reported. The vehicle was not towed.

No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.

Struck Guardrail, Then Tree

Newtown Police report Nobuntu Ntenga, 34, of Bridgeport, operating a 2017 Honda Civic, was traveling eastbound on Toddy Hill Road at 6:47 am January 7. While negotiating a right turn in the road, Ntenga’s vehicle slid on the snow- and slush-covered roadway and went off the road to the left, striking a guardrail. The vehicle then crossed back over the road right and struck a tree.

No injuries were reported. The vehicle was towed.

Ntenga was issued a verbal warning for traveling too fast for conditions.

Struck Utility Pole

Newtown Police report Joycelyn Dossantos, 27, of Trumbull, operating a 2022 Lexus LX 350, was traveling northbound on Mile Hill Road South at 7:24 am January 7. Dossantos lost control of the vehicle due to slippery road conditions and went off the roadway right, striking a utility pole.

Dossantos was transported to Danbury Hospital with a possible injury. The vehicle was towed.

Dossantos was issued a misdemeanor summons for traveling too fast for conditions and operation of a motor vehicle with a suspended license.

Fender Bender In Lot

Newtown Police report Sofia Doersch, 18, of Sandy Hook, operating a Toyota Highlander, was pulling into a parking spot at Newtown High School at 2:23 pm January 8. While pulling forward to then back up, the right front bumper of Doersch’s vehicle struck the right front bumper of a 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLC owned by Jeanie Budge of Newtown.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.

Rear Ended At Intersection

Newtown Police report Owen Lenahan, 18, of Roxbury, operating a 2019 Ford Superduty, was traveling east on Wasserman Way at 3:32 pm January 9. Lenahan came to a stop behind a 2018 Subaru Legacy operated by Leann White, 30, of Shelton, who was stopped at the red light at the intersection of Berkshire Road. While White was waiting to turn right, the front of Lenahan’s vehicle made contact with the rear of White’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Lenahan was issued a verbal warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Vehicle Rolled Into Ditch

Newtown Police report David Kaye, 39, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2018 Hyundai Ioniq, was sitting in his driveway on his phone at 8:56 pm January 9. Kaye stepped out of the vehicle and his vehicle rolled out of his driveway, across the street and into a ditch.

No injuries were reported. The vehicle was towed due to disabling damage.

Struck On Off-Ramp

Newtown Police report Marc Blass, 39, of Oakville, operating a 2011 Ford Edge, was traveling southbound on the Interstate 84 exit 10 eastbound off ramp at 7:47 am January 11. He was behind a 2021 Subaru Forester operated by Tania Santiago-Figueroa, 43, of Naugatuck. Santiago-Figueroa stopped at the end of the ramp to wait to make a right turn onto Church Hill Road. Blass’s vehicle struck hers from behind.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Blass was issued a verbal warning for making an improper turn.

Hit Stop Sign

Newtown Police report Luke Loudon, 22, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2013 Chevrolet Silverado, was traveling eastbound on Berkshire Road at 3:35 pm January 11. While slowing to make a left turn onto Pole Bridge Road, Loudon reported that an animal walked across the road in front of his vehicle, and he swerved to avoid it. His vehicle left the roadway and hit the stop sign.

No injuries were reported. The vehicle was not towed.

Loudon was given a verbal warning for failure to maintain the proper lane.

Black Ice Causes Two Rollovers

Newtown Police report Colon Ruiz, 55, of Bridgeport, operating a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado, was traveling northbound on South Main Street at 5:38 am January 12. Trebour Bryant, 46, of Bridgeport, operating a 2014 Hino 338, was traveling northbound on South Main Street behind Ruiz. Upon approaching the intersection with Abbey Lane, Ruiz lost control of his vehicle on black ice, struck a curb, and rolled the vehicle onto its roof, coming to a stop in the southbound lane. Bryant, upon approaching the same intersection, also lost control on the black ice and rolled his vehicle onto its passenger side, colliding with Ruiz’s vehicle in the southbound lane.

Ruiz and a passenger were transported by emergency services for possible injuries. Both vehicles were towed.

Both operators were issued a verbal warning for traveling too fast for conditions.

Too Fast For Conditions

Newtown Police report Catherine Mollitor, 42, of Stratford, operating a 2011 Kia Soul, was traveling northbound on South Main Street at 5:08 am January 14. Mollitor’s vehicle crossed the center lane and the rear passenger side of the vehicle struck a curb on the southbound shoulder of the roadway.

Mollitor reported a possible injury but was not transported. The vehicle was not towed.

Mollitor was issued a verbal warning for traveling too fast for conditions.

Hit By Tree Limb

Newtown Police report Caitlin Durkin, 36, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2016 Nissan Altima, was traveling southbound on Gelding Hill Road at 3:52 pm January 14. While traveling, the vehicle was struck by a falling tree limb.

No injuries were reported and the vehicle was not towed.

Collision Or No?

Newtown Police report Nicole Capener, 49, of Newtown, operating a 2008 Honda Pilot, was backing down a driveway on Cedar Circle to make a grocery delivery at 8:17 pm January 15. The owner of a 2021 Jeep Wrangler parked in the drive, Melissa Gordon of Newtown, told police she heard a crash in the driveway and went outside to find Capener and her vehicle attempting to make a grocery delivery.

Gordon said an argument started between her and Capener over whether there had been a collision, and Capener left the driveway. Capener told police while backing her car down the driveway, she drove over black ice which made a loud cracking sound. Capener said she fell on the black ice and then called customer service of the company she was delivering for. Capener said she did not hit the vehicle.

Police reported a small dent was found on the rear passenger side bumper of Gordon’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported.

No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.
