To the Editor:

Pickleball? [naviga:u]What’s that?[/naviga:u] A question enthusiasts of the sport so often hear when we are mentioning it to nonparticipants. Pickleball is a fun sport known as the fastest growing new sport in the USA. Actually, it’s about 50 years since it’s beginning, and it’s taken most communities by storm, Newtown included.

Currently, there are four dedicated outdoor pickleball courts planned for the Fairfield Hills Campus. On behalf of the Newtown pickleball community, I urge the Town Council to move in a favorable direction and to fund this project sooner than later. Newtown currently has one dedicated outdoor court at Treadwell Park, which, when built, immediately became so popular that two tennis courts were lined with pickleball lines to accommodate the overflow. It’s an intergenerational sport, with the senior population filling the courts by day and families in the evening. Pickleball can be learned in a few hours and within a few more hours, players can be interacting in a healthy, social, feel-good sport! The four new planned courts will be a great addition to the growing Newtown pickleball community.
