The Reed Intermediate School counseling department organized a "Lunch and Learn" program for the fifth and sixth graders at the school, for students to learn about different career choices from volunteers visiting the school at lunch time.

The event took place over two days, according to school counselor Jen Welton, and this is the fourth year it has been offered.

On Tuesday, January 10, the second day of the event, students could learn from a geologist, an information technology consultant and virtual chief executive officer, a genetic counselor, from a president of a branding and design agency, and an architect and builder.

Students were working at different tables as David Adams, an architect and builder with Design Builders & Remodeling, Inc, in Ridgefield showed students how to draw extensions to either their dream home or their family's home. Mr Adams started his presentation with a lesson on how to design to scale. Many students opted to design game rooms or 40-car garages, Mr Adams said.

In another room, parent Jodi Markowsky described how she grew up with a father who was an earth science teacher.

"I always grew up appreciating the world around us," she said, before further sharing how she became a geologist.

Ms Welton said the Lunch and Learn event is part of the school's career development program, and it was designed to offer students a chance to learn about different careers that may interest them. All of the presenters were parent volunteers, according to Ms Welton.
