Newtown High School’s track and field teams participated in a South-West Conference developmental meet at Wesleyan University, in Middletown, on January 18. Top Newtown boys’ team results are as follows:

4x200 medley relay: 8. Ben Mason, Michael Capaldo, Adam Manes, and Cormac Roe, 1:42.82.

4x800: Ethan Burg, Christian Lestik, Misha Prud’homme, and Joel Duval, 8:46.81.

55 hurdles: 5. Cole Terry, 8.70.

55 dash: 5. Brett Deri, 8.70.

1000: 4. Duval, 2:52.14; 9. Richard Linley, 2:53.76.

600: 11. Dylan Bartlett, 1:34.94.

1600: 3. Duval, 4:52.42; 8. Burg. 4:56.28.

1600 sprint medley: 3. Jack Lavelle, Kevin Arther, James Carney, and Duval, 3:56.74.

300: 10. Arther, 41.18.

3200: 2. Burg, 10:24.84.

Girls Shine In Meets

Newtown High School’s girls’ squad highlights from the SWC developmental meet, as well as the Yale University High School Track Classic on January 15 (the boys’ highlights from the Yale Classic were posted earlier).

Sarah Mawdsley had a personal record time of 5:38.14 in the 1600 (Class LL qualifier). She also ran a PR of 11:41.53 in the 3200 (2 seconds off the school record; Class LL qualifier)

Jackie Sgobbo tied her PR of 9 feet in the pole vault at Yale.

Lauren Russo cleared 10-6 feet in the pole vault at the SWC developmental.

Makenna Cerney improved her 55 meter hurdles time at Yale with a 9.79.

Taylor Pare qualified for states in the 3200 with a 11:39.96 in the 3000 at Yale.

Erin Tressler improved her state qualifying time in the 1600 by running 5:25.58 in the one mile race. She also broke a school record that stood for ten years in the 1000 at the SWC Developmental with a time of 3:10.42.

Maddie Findley qualified for States in the 1000 with a time of 3:23.71 at Yale.

Sarah Dowling qualified for states in the long jump with a jump of 14-11.75 at Yale and also improved her SWC qualifying high jump with a 4-6.

Camryn Cicarelli qualified for SWCs in the 600 with a time 1:51.74.

Marley Marston qualified for states in the shot-put with a throw of 28-4.

Newtown’s freshman core of hurdlers, sprinters, and distance runners had a good weekend as well. Audrey Benson improved her state qualifying 55 hurdles time with a 9.89 at the SWC developmental. Emma Curtis qualified for SWCs in the 55 dash with a time of 8.08. Grace Pettinelli also qualified for SWCs in the 55 dash with a time of 7.8. Lu Hage improved her qualifying time in the 1000 with a time of 3:20.80.

The relay teams also had an exceptional weekend. The 4x800 team of of Lu Hage, Madison Findley, Camryn Cicarelli, and Erin Tressler ran a state qualifying time of 10:14.82 at Yale. The 4x200 relay of Emma Curtis, Grace Pettinelli, Julia Sughrue, and Sarah Dowling ran a state qualifying time of 1:54.98 at the SWC developmental. The 4x400 team of Sarah Houle, Camryn Cicarelli, Makenna Cerney, and Lauren Russo ran a state qualifying time of 4:22.75 at Yale. The sprint medley relay of Emma Curtis, Grace Pettinelli, Erin Tressler, and Maddie Findley ran a state qualifying time of 4:41.44 at the SWC developmental.
