Newtown High School’s boys’ swimming and diving team earned a 100-83 victory over host Bethel, at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury, on January 19. Divers Ian Humber and Kyle Gaynor both broke the team record with their scores. Humber placed first in the meet with a score of 264, and Gaynor was second 256.40; the previous record was 254.90.

Newtown Coach Zach Gauvin noted that the diving record had stood since 2000 and said great things should come for Humber and Gaynor.

“Both of them dove extremely well and are setting themselves up for a huge championship season. I felt like the swimmers built off of the divers’ performance and swam a great meet themselves, which is great to see because of the tough meets coming up in our schedule,” Gauvin said.

In the win over Bethel, Newtown’s top results include (times unavailable):

200 medley relay, first: Tommy Horan, Caelan Ritter, Chris Lafky, and Owen Gray. 200 free, second: David Lawrence. 200 IM, first: Peter Fagerholm. 50 free, first: Gray. 100 butterfly, first: Lafky. 100 free, first: Horan. 500 free, second: Fagerholm. 200 free relay, second: Xavier Williams, Matt Kretz, Brandon Qiao, and Gray. 100 backstroke, first: Horan. 100 breaststroke, first: Ritter. 400 free relay, first: Lafky, Gray, Fagerholm, and Horan.
