HARTFORD — In order to vote in a Connecticut primary election, state laws require voters to be enrolled in the party holding the primary.

Secretary of the State Denise Merrill wants voters to know that if they are registered in one party, but want to vote in a different party’s presidential primary this April 28, they must change their registration by January 28.

Voters can check their current registration status at myvote.ct.gov/lookup, and make any desired changes to their registration at myvote.ct.gov/register.

Unaffiliated voters — voters who are not registered with any party for at least three months — and new voters have until Thursday, April 23, to register online, by mail, or at the DMV with the party in whose primary they would like to participate.

Those same individuals also have until Monday, April 27, to register in person.

Members of the Independent Party of Connecticut who wish to vote in the Presidential Primary of either major party must change their affiliation by January 28.

US citizens who reside in Connecticut, who will turn 18 by Election Day, November 3, 2020, are eligible to participate in the Presidential Primary on April 28 as long as they are registered to vote with that party, Newtown Registrar LeReine Frampton noted.

There are currently 2,192,828 active voters registered in Connecticut; 895,218 are registered as unaffiliated voters, 803,802 are registered in the Democratic Party, 459,403 are registered in the Republican Party, and 34,405 are registered in some other party.
