Girls 8th

New Castle Tournament

Newtown 43, New Castle 25 – Nora Lynn Shimko canned 18 points and Kaila Harrington and Adelle Cerretta combined for an additional 10 as nine of 10 players got into the scoring column in the tournament opener.

Yorktown 48, Newtown 44 – Jen Brewer scored 14 points and Nora Lynn Shimko chipped in with 11 as Newtown fell to the eventual tournament champs. Kasey Schulz, Jordyn Good and Rachel Taback added four points apiece. Kelsey Hopper played tough defense against a bigger Yorktown and led the team in rebounding.

Newtown 45, Scarsdale 28 – Nora Lynn Shimko scored 16 points and Linda Magliocco chipped in 10 as the locals secured a spot in the tournament playoffs. Rachele Cox and Kasey Schulz combined for an additional 11 points.

Newtown 45, New Castle 39 – In the tournament semi-finals, Jen Brewer scored 15 points and Kasey Schulz contributed eight to lead Newtown to the win. Jordyn Good and Nora Lynn Shimko added six points each.

Yorktown 40, Newtown 27 – Newtown ran out of steam as they lost to the returning tournament champions. Jen Brewer scored 11 points and Nora Lynn Shimko chipped in with six. Rachel Taback had six points and four rebounds.

Boys 7th

Newtown 61, New Fairfield 30 – After a sluggish start the Newtown seventh-grade boys easily pulled away from their FCBL league rivals. Nick Nazer, Ralph Sergiovanni, George Zaruba, Kyle Kromberg and Dan Lynch combined for 47 points. Max Paynter, Casey Tenney and Dan Greenwood anchored a suffocated man-to-man defense and forced many turnovers that led to easy baskets. Pete Young snared 12 rebounds to help the cause.

Newtown 60, Easton 10 – Newtown cruised to its 11th straight win. Newtown dominated the offensive and defensive boards never letting the opponent in the game. Ralph Sergiovanni had a double-double (22 points, 14 rebounds), while Dan Greenwood and Casey Tenney each added a season-high eight points and three steals.

Newtown 68, St. Mary’s 43 – The locals improved to 12-0 overall and 8-0 in the FCBL with a win over St. Mary’s. Kyle Kromberg, Nick Nazer, Pete Young, Ralph Sergiovanni, Max Paynter and George Zaruba all scored nine points in leading the balanced attack. Zaruba also added 10 boards while Dan Lynch had seven steals.

Girls 7th

Wilton 49, Newtown 47 (OT) – Sara Kelley sank two free throws with seconds left in regulation play to send the Lady Hawks into overtime with Wilton, but the locals fell in overtime. Kelley led Newtown with 23 points (5-of-8 from the line) while Kate Bowen played well and scored 16. Kaitlin Marsden added six while Carolyn Fagan and Jennifer Daily chipped in with four points apiece. Nicole Elias led the team in rebounding with nine boards.

Norwalk 55, Newtown 23 – Newtown struggled against undefeated Norwalk. Ally Modzelewski scored five points while Stephanie Suhoza and Brittany Wiberg netted four each. Meghan Bridges played well defensively for Newtown.

Boys 5th

Weston 31, Newtown 26 – Good offensive playing by Taylor Steimle, Austin Bonadio, and Sean Ross led the fifth grade boys. Michael Lord and Josh Barrett provided some tough defense.

Greenwich 33, Newtown 24 – Trey Trudell and Daniel Gallagher played well on offense while the defense held tough with Kevin LeBlanc, Dominick Fedak, and Michael Greenwood.

Girls 5th

Westport  27,  Newtown 24 – Jessica Jowdy and Jessica Lynch combined for 16 points while Meghan Condon and Kendall Svanda each contributed six rebounds against the taller Westport team.

Newtown 32,  New Canaan 23 – Newtown knocked off another undefeated team, this time using a suffocating defense. Nora Murphy and Molly Mahony led the defensive effort, while Alyssa Finkenstadt (10 points), Jessica Lynch (8), Jessica Jowdy (6) and Kendall Svanda (6) fueled the offense.

Newtown 35, Fairfield 7 – Riley Wurtz and Jessica Jowdy combined for 14 steals, Abbey Doski had six points and four assists and Christina Caporale added five rebounds as Newtown (7-3) won handily at home. Alyssa Finkenstadt and Jessica Lynch contributed eight points each in the win.

IN-HOUSE

Junior Girls

Sixers 19, Pacers 18 – Kaley Kruger and Erin Fish each scored nine points to lead the Sixers to victory. For the Pacers, Lindsay Laub had 10 points and 10 rebounds. Defensively Meagan Kelly had four steals and Natalie Villa had 10 rebounds. Annie Fletcher also played well contributing four points and grabbing six rebounds.

Bulls 29, Celtics 18 – Kelly Sullivan poured in 12 points and Rachel Fossum chipped in four more for the Bulls. Bernice Bryant, Meredith Letso and Michelle Davies also played well. The Celtics were led by Lyndsay Burns, who scored six points. Sam Lockhart had six assists, Rebecca Castegner had three steals and Jackie Isabella grabbed five rebounds.

Huskies 36, Knicks 22 – Betsy Vendel canned 24 points while her sister Lisa added six more to pace the Huskies. Bryony Langdon grabbed seven rebounds and Shannon Zamary had six blocked shots for the Huskies. For the Knicks, Lauren Picerno had eight points, Danielle Rubino had four assists and Meghan Gibbons snagged three steals.

Celtics 32, Pacers 22 – Lyndsay Burns and Sam Lockhart had 10 points apiece while Laura Newberry chipped in eight points and five assists to lead the Celtics. Makena Cunningham and Becky Lipnick had strong floor games. The Pacers were led Lindsay Laub’s 12-point effort. Brady Eggleston ripped down 11 rebounds, Emily Weber had four assists and Ines Hutchinson had five steals.

Bulls 26, Huskies 23 – Kelly Sullivan led the Bulls to victory with 10 points, while Erin Nemeth spearheaded the defense. Megan Sajovic and Bernice Bryant also had fine floor games for the Bulls. Betsy Vendel led the Huskies with 16 points as Lisa Vendel added seven. Kate Foy grabbed eight rebounds and Shannon Zamary had three steals in this hard fought game.

Sixers 36, Knicks 25 – Kat Donahue was in the zone and poured in 11 points to lead the Sixers to victory. Katie Pessin had six assists, Taylor Ansbro had four steals and Gina Pisacreta grabbed five rebounds for the Sixers. The Knicks were led by Marnie Thompson’s seven points. Meghan Gibbons dished off five assists and Jen Spanedda grabbed seven rebounds.

Junior Boys

Eagles 46, Rockets 40 – Robbie Phillips and Keith McGrath canned 17 points apiece to lead the Eagles to the win. Kyle O’Connor grabbed eight boards and Nicky Wolf played solid D. For the Rockets, Brendan Blawie scored 15 points and Ryan Goodridge added 11 more, Kevin Carney and Josh Baron had fine floor games.

Jaspers 58, Nuggets 39 – John Kostecki scored 17 points to power the Jaspers to the win. For the Nuggets, Eric Hoffman dished off six assists and Evan Triandifilides had seven rebounds.

Hawkeyes 30, Yellowjackets 29 – Matt Hill dished off five assists, Connor McNamara had four steals and Tom Mascher grabbed six rebounds to lead the Hawkeyes. For the ‘Jackets, Brian Reszoly popped in 15 points while Ryan Schmidt, Ed White and Joe Fedak played well.

Huskies 49, Bobcats 33 – Joe Cappiello poured in 21 points to lead the Huskies to the win. Zack Brazo (despite having a tooth knocked out) had nine points while AJ Ritchie had six assists and Zack Dolughy had four steals. For the ‘Cats, Dan Quinn canned 12 points and Jeff Selezan added seven more.

Wildcats 59, Nighthawks 21 – Jake DeVellis popped in 20 points while Vince LaFrancesca and Mike Lago scored eight points apiece to lead the Wildcats. Keith Reszoly chipped in with four points. For the ‘Hawks, Paul Murphy, Robbie Blanc and Rob Brautigam combined for 15 points.

Celtics 52, Knicks 31 – Joe Selezan canned 17 points and Rockwell Anyoha added 10 to lead the Celtics past the Knicks. Jamie Vavrek dished off nine assists while Dan Mahony and Trevor Todd played well. For the Knicks, Michael Whitley-Rodriguez had nine points.

Lakers 52, Bullets 40 – Andrew Meisel scored 16 points while Jeff DiNicola and Tyler Edwards combine for 25 more to lead the Lakers to the win. Brendan O’Connell and RJ Swift combine for 18 rebounds. For the Bullets, Charlie Kerr popped in 14 points.

Huskies 44, Heat 40 – Joe Cappiello scored 17 points and Ryan Daly scored six points while grabbing 10 rebounds to lead the Huskies past the Heat. AJ Ritchie had six steals. For the Heat, John Aminti canned 11 points while Eric Thornberg (six assists), Jeff Brown (three steals) and Rich Andreotta (four rebounds) played well.

Intermediate Girls

Da Bears 36, Suns 20 – Andrea Nazer poured in 26 points as Da Bears rolled to da win. Mara Scallon dished off seven assists as Katie Cummings grabbed six rebounds. Meredith Bridges played well. For the Suns, Marilyn LaCroce scored 12 points as Stef Clavett, Marissa Cucco and Breanne Lubinsky rebounded well. Caitlin Dowling and Lainey Audet played well on D.

Intermediate Boys

Nighthawks 36, Regulators 25 – Henry Helgren popped in 12 points as the ‘Hawks soared to the win. Ryan Dunnigan, Jason Marks and Kyle Harrington all played well. For the Regulators, Will Fletcher had eight points as Griffin Paynter, Austin Ryder and Nick Dinelli had strong floor games.

Eagles 45, Mavericks 33 – Oliver Powers had 14 points and Ben Stoller, Mike Zaccaro and Mason West played well and lifted the Eagles to the win. For the Mavericks, Tom Capozziello canned nine points as Peter Ovendorf, Peter Kerns and Yanni Koutmos had fine performances.

Vikings 33, Wildcats 19 – Alex Saviano poured in 24 points to lead the Vikings past the Wildcats. George Primavera, Kevin Phillips and Austin Ekstrom had strong games. For the Wildcats, Brandon Body scored six points while Chris Haylon, Michael George and Dylan Berger had solid games.

Hawkeyes 26, Celtics 22 – David Lucia grabbed 10 rebounds and Robert Mascher made seven steals as the Hawkeyes clipped the Celtics. Tom Stewart dished off six assists. For the Celtics, Ryan Korth had nine points while Rob Beier and Caleb Benore played well.

Knicks 44, Vipers 31 – Dan White canned 16 points to lift the Knicks to the win. Michael Fitzsimmons and Thomas Johnson had solid floor games. For the Vipers, Ryan Powers poured in 20 points as Greg Frattaroli led the D.

Bullets 37, Trailblazers 20 – Derek Krewson scored 10 points and Sam Kerr dished off 10 assists to lead the Bullets to the win. Rob Daigle made six steals and Patrick Zingaro was solid off the glass. For the ‘Blazers, Will Northrup had six points as Scott Wexler, Brendan McNamara and Logan Mammen played well.

Vipers 30, Celtics 22 – Ryan Powers and Steve Braun popped in 13 points apiece to lead the Vipers to the win. Greg Frattaroli and Eric McCabe played well. For the Celtics, Will Korth had eight points as Christian Sayegh, Caleb Benore and Trevor Carey had nice performances.

Wildcats 21, Blazers 17 – Kevin Dennis had six points and Chris Haylon grabbed four rebounds to lead the Wildcats. Colin Morris made four steals. For the Blazers, Scott Wexler canned five points while Brendan McNamara and Brian Reed played well.

Wildcats 17, Nighthawks 15 – Max Brazo and Pat Sullivan combined for 13 points, with Brazo sinking a pair of free throws at the end of the game to secure the win for the Wildcats. Kevin Dill, Brandon Body and Dylan Berger all played well. For the Nighthawks, Ryan Pasko and Austin Puleri scored six points apiece as Hank Helgren, Matt Hoffman and Sean Decker had strong games.

Hawkeyes 53, Mavericks 23 – Colin Cooper popped in 17 points as Josh Volpe and Sean Devaney had nice floor games to propel the Hawkeyes to the win. For the Mavs, Dan Sclafani scored 10 points while Peter Ovendorf and Luke Piazza played well.

Nighthawks 36, Huskies 24 – Hank Helgren scored 14 points and Theo Hartlett added six more to lift the Nighthawks to the win. Jason Marks and Matt Hoffman played well. For the Huskies, Tom Coscia scored 12 points and Chad Magoulas added six. Keenan Bennett, Tyler Covert and Kyle Wilcox put forth solid efforts.

Knicks 30, Vikings 14 – John Wlasuk scored 10 points and Dan White dished off six assists to lead the Knicks past the Vikings. Ashinay Tyagarajan, Thomas Johnson and Luke Sherwood played well. For the Vikings, Tom Murphy popped in six points as Tom DiLuoffo, George Primevera and Alex Saviano had solid floor games.

Bullets 41, Regulators 25 – Rob Uhde scored 11 points and Derek Krewson grabbed 10 rebounds as the Bullets rolled to the win. Joe Pieretti and Jonathan Hull (eight steals) had nice games. For the Regulators, Will Fletcher canned eight points as Griffin Paynter (four steals) and Nick Dinelli (six rebounds) had strong performances.

Midget Boys

Pistons versus Huskies – Steven Andreau, Patrick Rowley, David Gerics and Reid Schmidt played well for the Pistons as Spence Brindley, Pat Riccardi, Robbie Hughes and David Cartisano powered the Huskies.

Grizzlies versus Tigers – Zach Waller, Brendan Peterson, Christian Barrett and Stephen Rahr had fine games for the Grizzlies as Tyler Coleman, Nick Madden, Jake Feinstein and Dan Gustafson led the Tigers.

Raptors versus Squarepants – Harrison Buzzi, Austin Raftery, Alex LaCroce and Kyle Gordon played well for the Raptors.

Celtics versus Blue Devils – Alex Roneo, Steven Walsh, Michael Scharfenberg and Cameron Tungram played well for the Celtics as Sean Elliott, Devon DiNicola, Yossi Kohrman-Glaser and Nehar Patel powered the Devils.

Red Bombers versus Golden Eagles – Dean Demers, Nick Gerbo, Daniel Winn and Patrick Haggerty powered the Bombers as Nicholas Cagganello, Jonathan Vaughn, Bubba LeBlanc and Logan Puleri led the Eagles.

Orange Crush versus Huskies – Chris Erikson, Brian Kruger, Charlie Helgren and Mitchell Stewart had strong games for the Crush as Matt Rahtelli and Eric Fiore powered the Huskies.

Blue Lightning versus Celtics – Matt Rosa, Pieter Martino, Nick Sajovic and James Marusi led the Lightning as the Celtics were powered by Nick Klein, Josh Villa, Ryan Palmer and Michael Senf.

Challengers versus Nighthawks – Max Lopez, Jack Benedict, Harrison Snellback and Tom Bauer led the Challengers while Matt McGoldrich, Chase Wurtz, Colin Moller and Daniel Hamar led the ‘Hawks.
