Artwork created by three Newtown High School students will be part of the 2017 Scholastic Art Awards Exhibit, which opened January 15 at the Silpe Gallery at the Hartford Art School, 201 Bloomfield Avenue, West Hartford.

"Feathers Will Stand," a ceramic piece by senior Alexandra Ferris; a self-portrait, "Curiosity," by senior Haley Streck; and "Teapot of Nature," a ceramic piece by freshman Katerina Rosen, were selected for the exhibit.

The 2017 Scholastic Art Awards Exhibit runs through February 3. Hours are Monday to Friday, from 10 am until 4 pm, and from noon to 4 pm on weekends.

The annual exhibit is part of the Connecticut Regional Scholastic Art Awards program. Awards and winners will be announced at a ceremony scheduled for January 29 at the University of Hartford, according to an announcement from the program. Students chosen for the exhibit are eligible for awards.

The Connecticut Regional Scholastic Awards is a nonprofit, sponsored by the Connecticut Art Education Association, according to the group's website, caeaartawards.net.

All three NHS students said their creations were made in classes with NHS art teacher Carol Pelligra.

"I really like feathers and I also think the Native American culture is pretty cool," said Alexandra, holding her ceramic mug.

Katerina said stacked rocks were her inspiration for her piece, and Haley said she made her piece last year, as a Drawing 2 student.
