Relay Team Sets Record As Track Teams Compete In Two Meets
Newtown High School’s girls’ and boys’ indoor track and field teams competed in the Yale Classic Invitational in New Haven on January 16 and 17, and participated in the South-West Conference Developmental meet at Wesleyan University in Middletown on January 19.
At the Yale Invitational, the girls’ team’s 4x800 relay team of Erin Tressler, Emma Bayuk, Camryn Cicarelli, and Jess Keller, set a school record by completing the race in a time of 10:07.53. The relay team was fourth among Connecticut competitors. Micaela Nowacki was 13th in the shot-put event with a throw of 30-08. The 4x400 relay team of Shelby Tolla, Makenna Cerney, Nicole Russo, and Keller was fourth among Connecticut teams in 4:23.63.
In the SWC meet, Nowacki won the shot-put event with a throw of 31-09.50. Cerney was fifth in the 55 hurdles in 9.88, Shay Fahey placed seventh in the 55 dash in 7.99, Tressler was fifth in the 1000 in 3:15.03 and Madison Findley came in tenth in the 1000 in 3:36.62. Keller, Bayuk, and Sarah Houle were third, fifth, and ninth, respectively, in the 600 with times of 1:46.72, 1:47.80, and 1:50.17. Sarah Mawdsley came in fifth in the 1600 in 5:52.34. Tolla placed third in the 300 in 45.41. Mawdsley, Findley, and Kelsey Miller were second, fifth, and sixth, respectively, in the 3200 with times of 12:22.93, 3:18.00, and 13:18.65. Bailey Smith jumped 4-04 to placed seventh in the high jump event. Newtown had four top-ten finishers in the pole vault event as Lauren Russo (8-00) placed second, Jackie Sgobbo and Emma Lloyd tied for fourth (7-06), and Keira Veillette was ninth (6-00).
The boys had some strong performances throughout the two meets. Highlights from both are as follows: David Csordas qualified for the state championships in the two mile with a time of 10:15.25. He also qualified in the 1600 with a time of 4:48.05. Ethan Burg qualified for states in the two mile with a time of 10:16.33. Gus Porto qualified for states in the 55 dash with a time of 6.99. Jason Ferrari qualified for states in the 300 dash with a time of 39.40. Forrest Weatherby qualified for the SWC championships in the 300 dash with a time of 40.20. Gus Porto and Connery Mayer qualified for SWC in the long jump with jumps of 17-10 and 17-1, respectively. Richard Linley qualified in the 1000 with a time of 2:57.73. The 4x800 relay team of Misha Prud’Homme, Joel Duval, Ethan Burg, and David Csordas improved their state and SWC qualifying times by finishing the race in 8:53.18.
