(AP) A children’s triathlon program inspired by the life a 7-year-old boy who was killed in the Sandy Hook School shooting is expanding in Connecticut.

The CMAK Sandy Hook Memorial Foundation has reached an agreement with the Greater Waterbury YMCA, Regional YMCA of Western Connecticut in Danbury, and the Central Connecticut Coastal YMCA in Trumbull to host the Race4Chase Kid’s Tri program.

The program will start in June, teaching kids swimming, running and bicycling for six weeks. It will culminate with a short-course triathlon competition at Camp Mataucha in Watertown on August 2.

The program honors Chase Michael Anthony Kowalski, who competed in his first triathlon the summer before he was killed.

A signing ceremony launching the program is scheduled for January 23 at the Greater Waterbury YMCA.

The foundation has said it is working with the YMCA to create protocols and a package that will allow other organizations across the country to set up similar Race4Chase triathlons.

The YMCA also will dedicate a plaque at the entrance to its preschool recognizing $20,000 in scholarship grants funded by the foundation to support families in need who attend that school. The foundation says the money will support 130 children at the school.

The foundation also plans to present the center’s director with a toy wooden ark, a gift from the Kowalski family.
