John Joseph Dunn

Decorated War Hero

John Joseph Dunn, 86, of Vero Beach, Fla., died January 10 at Indian River Memorial Hospital. He was born in New York City and moved to Florida 28 years ago from Stamford.

Mr Dunn is survived by his five children, Kevin Dunn of Newtown, Barbara McAleer of Vero Beach, Susan Dunn-Koda of Brookfield, N.H., Laurie Dunn of Stamford, and James Dunn, of Trumbull; also by 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Mary-Ellen Keeley Dunn; and by his sister, Helen Ford.

He was a graduate of the US Coast Guard Academy and served as a navigator with the Merchant Marine before and during World War II. While serving in the Merchant Marine, he earned the Merchant Marine Distinguished Service Medal and the Atlantic Zone Medal. He was also honored in 1985 with a Commemorative Medal for his heroism in the North Atlantic marking the 40th Anniversary of the Victory of the Great Patriotic War. Before he retired, Mr Dunn was the chief facilities engineer for Olin Chemical Corporation in Stamford.

 He enjoyed gardening, golf, reading, research, and world travel. He was an active participant when it came to discussing politics or recounting his life’s adventures.
