Easton Man Charged In Robbery At Big Y

Police arrested an Easton man on robbery, theft, and endangerment charges following an incident on Monday afternoon at the Big Y supermarket at Newtown Shopping Village on Queen Street.

Police arrested Gary Dumas, 42, of 44 Hillside Drive, Easton, on charges of third degree robbery, sixth degree larceny, and second degree reckless endangerment. After he posted $5,000 bail, police released Dumas for a January 31 arraignment in Danbury Superior Court.

Police Patrol Officer Domenic Costello reports that at about 11:10 pm, Dumas entered the supermarket and then placed $198.48 worth of merchandise in a shopping cart.

Dumas then attempted to leave the store without paying for the goods, Officer Costello said.

When a male store security officer attempted to stop Dumas, the suspect then ran away.

When the security guard caught up with Dumas, he shoved his elbow in the security officer’s face, Officer Costello said. The impact knocked the security officer to the ground.

Dumas then got inside his vehicle and drove out of the parking lot, almost running over the security guard in doing so, Officer Costello said.

Based on identifying information that police received, police later located Dumas and arrested him.

The robbery charge is a felony. The other charges are misdemeanors.
