45th Anniversary
At Christ The King, Sunday
The 45th anniversary to the day of the first worship service held by the people of Christ the King Lutheran Church on Mt Pleasant Road will be observed at the parishâs 10:30 am service, on Sunday, January 22.
Hymns sung at the first service will be incorporated into the anniversary service. The Senior Choir and the Sunday School Singers will both present anthems for the event and a coffee hour in the Fellowship Hall will follow the service.
The initial worship service of the congregation was held on Sunday, January 22, 1961. Charter members of the congregation note that on that particular Sunday, Newtown reached its lowest recorded temperature ever but a group of 90 people met in Hawley School for the initial service, nevertheless.
The church building, 40 years old this year, was dedicated five years after the initial service held by the group.
Throughout 2006, special anniversary activities will be celebrated by the parish. The founding pastor, Reverend James Ilten, will preach at the official Anniversary Year service on Sunday, April 2. Pastor and Mrs Ilten now live in retirement in Illinois.
At the anniversary coffee hour, the remaining charter members of the congregation will be recognized.
The community is invited to all of the anniversary year events.
