Motorcyclist Killed In Mt Pleasant Road Accident
Police report that at about 3 pm on Thursday, January 19, a male motorcyclist traveling on Mt Pleasant Road, in the area between its intersections with Mt Pleasant Terrace and Diamond Drive, struck a section of flex-beam guardrailing alongside the roadway and died as a result of injuries received in the collision.The Newtown Bee will provide additional details as they become available.
Police did not identify the person killed in the accident, pending notification of the next of kin. There was one person riding the motorcycle, police said.
Police, Newtown Hook & Ladder volunteer firefighters, and the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps responded to the scene. Police found a heavily damaged black motorcycle lying on southbound Mt Pleasant Road. The motorcyclist was found down an embankment alongside the road.
Paramedics determined that the motorcyclist had died due to the extent of injuries received in the impact, police said.
A lengthy section of Mt Pleasant Road was closed to through-traffic as the evening rush period started, and as police began their detailed investigation into the crash. Police said at 4:30 pm that the investigation might take between six and eight hours to complete, during which time the affected road section would be closed to through-traffic.
Detours were set up in the area to divert traffic away from the accident scene. Northbound traffic on Main Street was detoured onto Currituck Road as an alternate route.
Multiple police officers were stationed at the accident scene, where the police department's accident reconstruction team was starting its detailed probe into the crash.
