JOYCE MELANDER-DAYTON AT JUNE KELLY GALLERY APRIL 20 w/1 cut

avv/gs set 4-5 #695084

NEW YORK CITY — “New Work,” an exhibition of vibrant new canvases by Joyce Melander-Dayton — expressive works that display a spectrum of paint, beads, yarn and textiles — will open at the June Kelly Gallery, 591 Broadway on Friday, April 20. The exhibition will be on view through May 19.

The exhibition will then tour to Gallery Shoal Creek in Austin, Texas, June 15–July 21 and Aaron Payne Fine Art in Santa Fe, N.M., September 28–October 27.

Art writer Hillarie M. Sheets, who visited the artist in her Santa Fe studio, says in the exhibition catalog that these new pieces have “an expansive feeling that evokes a quality of the wide-open terrain in which she lives.”

Melander-Dayton’s palette, Sheets writes, “reflects the way color tends to pop in the crystalline environment of New Mexico,” whether they are “the earthen terracotta syncopated rectangles or the brilliant pinks, oranges and blues in jostling squares that contrast against the natural weave of the canvas.”

Melander-Dayton’s paintings have been shown in solo exhibitions in galleries in Minneapolis; Hong Kong; and Messina and Modena, Italy. The artist has also been in many group exhibitions in recent years, including museums and galleries in Minneapolis, Santa Fe, Paris and Nashville.
