JOHN MCGRATH WORKS ON PAPER, ANNE SMITH ANTIQUES w/1 cut

ak/gs set 3-28 #693892

BALTIMORE, MD. — From April 12 through June 9, the gallery at Anne Smith Antiques will be exhibiting works on paper from the sketchbooks of John McGrath (Baltimore, 1885–1940). The exhibit consists of  many 6-by-4-inch and 5-by-7-inch watercolor drawings with a wide variety of subject matter showing life in Baltimore, New England, France and Italy during the first half of the Twentieth Century. Of particular interest are the many genre scenes of Brittany: cafés, carousels and figural renderings of working people, fisherman, fishwives and street vendors.

McGrath studied at the Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore, and at the Academies Julian and Colarossi, Paris. He was active in the Watercolor Club and the Charcoal Club, two Baltimore art groups. He is listed in the standard reference work, Who Was Who In American Art.

Anne Smith Antiques and Gallery is at 222 West Read Street. For more information, www.antiqtoymuseum.com or 410-230-0580.
