The Newtown Middle School girlsâ basketball team raised its record to 4-0 Tuesday with a 45-30 win over Danbury at the Police Athletic League (PAL) facility on Hayestown Road.
PAL now sponsors an interscholastic team made up of players from both Rogers Park and Broadview junior high schools.
The Lions jumped out to an 18-2 lead before Coach Bill Girard called off the dogs. Erica Carino led all scorers with 10 points, while Kelley Haines tossed in nine and Julie Iwanicki added eight. Erin Murdoch scored six. Girard was able to get every player into the lineup and all contributed to the win.
Stephanie Logan pulled down eight rebounds, while Iwanicki and Trina Ramsdell led the team in assists. Iwanicki and Haines recorded five steals apiece.
Boys Lose To Danbury
The boysâ middle school team dropped to 2-2 after falling to Danbury, 52-41. The Lions trailed by just four points heading into the pivotal fourth quarter, but Danbury managed to pull away.
âI though our guys played a gritty, tough game against a good team. We pressed late and they got behind us for a couple of fast break points,â said Coach John Girard. âThey had two guys who were lightning fast. What they have over there now is basically an all-star team.â
Andrew Fiscella had another big game for Newtown, scoring 24 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Matt McFadden added seven points and Devon Manfredonia chipped in with four.
Max Kaye and John Oliver both played well defensively.
