Hockey Teams Honor Player Who Died After On Ice Injury

MILFORD — Members of the Newtown-New Fairfield co-op and Staples of Westport high school hockey teams gathered in a circle at center ice prior to their game at Milford Ice Pavilion on January 8. They came together to honor Teddy Balkind, a St Luke’s of New Canaan player who died after being injured in a game against Brunswick School of Greenwich two nights earlier.

Newtown-New Fairfield fell 6-1 to Staples, then dropped a 3-1 decision to Masuk of Monroe in a makeup game at Danbury Ice Arena, on January 10.

Against Staples, Max Browne started in goal and stopped 21 of 25 shots over the course of the first two periods. Garrett McCollam stopped 11 of 12 shots in the third. Wiley Harris scored the lone Nighthawks’ goal, on the power play; he was assisted by James Celentano and Cam Gouveia.

In the Masuk game, Markus Paltauf stopped 27 shots; NHS was outshot 30-17. Celentano was assisted by Harris.
