Family Fun Night is going to the dogs (and cats).

Kitten Associates, a home foster-based, non-profit cat rescue group located in the heart of Sandy Hook, is partnering with Newtown Parks and Recreation, North Shore Animal League America, and Ben’s Lighthouse to host an Ice Skating Party & Family Fun Night at Dickinson Memorial Town Park Pavilion, 50 Elm Drive, on Friday, February 5, from 6 to 9 pm.

The event is free to residents of Newtown. Children and adults of any age are welcome to attend. Guests will need to bring their own ice skates.

Newtown Parks and Recreation is asking that people preregister online to attend the event at parks.newtown-ct.gov, using Activity Code 214101A. Parks & Recreation can also be reached by calling 203-270-4340.

If the weather isn’t cooperating and there’s no ice for skating, the party will still go on.

In addition to skating, with music provided by DJ Kevin Koschel; and Lucy, the animatronic polar bear, will give rides.

Ben’s Lighthouse will be offering ice bowling, snow painting, and snow lighthouse building.

A variety of hot beverages will be served alongside a small bonfire. Weather permitting, there will be a visit by the Hardcore Sweet Cupcake Truck. Hardcore Sweet Cupcakes owners Nicole and Jeremy Braddock operate out of a former pin workshop in Oakville, and have a winning episode of Food Network’s Cupcake Wars among their honors.

“We love coming up with unique ways to both educate and entertain the families in our community,” says Kitten Associates Founder and President Robin AF Olson. “Who would ever dream of bringing adoptable dogs and cats to an evening of ice skating, snow lighthouse building, snow painting and more, in the middle of winter?”

“We’re hoping that while families come out for an evening of fun, they take some time to meet our adoptable cats and the adoptable dogs from North Shore Animal League America, and that it will remind people that any time of year is a great time to add a new member to the family,” says the group’s vice president, Sam Moore. “Plus, what’s better than a nice warm cat or dog to snuggle up with on these cold nights?”

Olson adds that while the primary mission of Kitten Associates is rescuing cats and kittens, and placing them into loving homes, it’s also nice to partner with Ben’s Lighthouse, Newtown Parks and Recreation and North Shore to celebrate the joy of childhood by doing something out of the ordinary.

“We can affect great change when we work together and this is a great example of that. Now if it would just snow we’d be all set,” she said.

Multiple groups are working together to present a free Family Fun Night Ice Skating Party at Dickinson Park on February 5. If the weather is too warm for ice, the party will still go on with music, games and refreshments.
