Wrestlers Go 4-0 For The Week
By Steve Bigham
The NHS wrestlers put together a nice run this past week going 4-0 to improve its record to 7-4. Meanwhile, John Gouveia remains unbeaten at 19-0, while Mark Bonamici (15-4), Joel Minalgo (15-3), Jagi Gyamcho (17-2), and Dana VanBuskirk (9-3) are also enjoying outstanding seasons.
Newtownâs biggest win of this past week was probably the pin Thaddeus Adams put on Justin Waltzer in the heavyweight division to lift the Nighthawks over Immaculate 39-34 this past Saturday at a four-team meet in Newtown. The match was deadlocked going into the final meet and Adams did not disappoint.
Also on Saturday, the Nighthawks defeated Thomaston 47-29 and Brien McMahon 56-18, a pair of nonconference opponents.
Newtown beat an undermanned New Fairfield squad, 70-8, January 9. Its Southwest Conference (SWC) record now stands at 4-1. The locals were slated to travel to face Brookfield on Wednesday. They then head to Groton on Saturday to face host Fitch, Pomperaug, Manchester, and Platt Tech.
âWeâre coming down the home stretch so weâre really looking to step it up. Getting those three wins on Saturday was big for us,â Coach Alan Potter said.
In other news, captain Eric Puffer is out with a medical condition, which does not allow him to wrestle. Senior Matt Kuric has filled in for Puffer at the 189-pound class.
