Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multi-Purpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of The Commission on Aging. The center is run by Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For more information about programs offered at the Senior Center call 270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Wal-Mart Route 6). Cost is 65¢ each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip, 75¢ each way for out of town. Call 748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

 

This Week’s Programs

*The center will be closed MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY on Monday, January 21.

*MOHEGAN SUN, Wednesday, January 23; snow date is Friday, January 25. Depart at 8 am; $26 per person.

 

Upcoming Programs

*AARP TAX ASSISTANCE, February 4 through April on Mondays only from 9 am to noon. Bring last year’s tax return and all other pertinent information. Call 270-4310 for an appointment.

*RICHARD CLARK returns Wednesday, February 20, at 1 pm, with Love Letters, a Broadway hit as told through the reading of letters of complicated feelings and emotions during the World War II era.

*The COMMISSION ON AGING meets at the Senior Center the third Monday of the month at 5 pm. This month’s meeting, however, will be on January 28.

 

Day Trips

*Ace In The Hole presents SWINGING MARDI GRAS at the Tides in New Jersey for a Fat Tuesday Party on Tuesday, February 5. Enjoy Big band tunes, international skating stars, circus acrobats and beads, live dancing, and Dixieland marches. Depart at 9 am; cost is $77 per person.

*ST PATTY’S DAY CELEBRATION at Chez Josef on Friday, March 14. Enjoy a corned beef and cabbage dinner and an Irish extravaganza of Irish music and comedy.

 

Overnight Trips

*An overnight package at MOHEGAN SUN on February 27–28.  Receive a bonus package, lunch packages, and enjoy “A Russian Folk Fair” by The Moscow Circus. Call the Newtown Senior Center for the cost of the accommodations. Options are with or without the show. Reservations are still available.

 

Recurring Activities

*COMPUTER LESSONS are given every Monday and Tuesday at 3 pm.

*YOGA classes are Monday and Thursday at 10:30 am.

*BOWLING at Brookfield Lanes for Senior “Fun Bowl,” Tuesday and Thursday from noon to 3 pm.

*CARDS FOR OUR TROOPS every Tuesday morning from 10 am to noon and 1 to 3 pm.

*BEGINNERS BRIDGE LESSONS on Wednesday, 9:30 am, with Mary Matern.

*BOARD GAME DAY is every Thursday at 1 pm. Coffee or tea and snack will be supplied.

*MOVIE TIME on Fridays at 1 pm. Enjoy a good “favorite” movie with a friend. We supply the video and popcorn.

Monday: AM pinochle, hatha yoga, exercise, PM computer classes, chorus group.

Tuesday: AM pinochle, country-western line dancing; PM Tai Chi & Chi Kung, bowling, walking for fitness, computer classes, crafts.

Wednesday: AM exercise; PM bingo, crafts.

Thursday: AM Breakfast Club, hatha yoga, cards; PM bowling, walking for fitness, board games.

Friday: AM advanced mah jongg, sewing, quilting, PM movie time, knitting, cards.

 

Menu For Week of

January 21–25

Monday: Martin Luther King Day — Closed

Tuesday: Chili with meat and beans served over half of a baked potato and topped with cheddar cheese, corn, buttermilk biscuit, seasonal fresh fruit.

Wednesday: Baked stuffed salmon or ham and cheese sandwich on rye with mustard, parsley boiled potato, broccoli, rye bread (fish only), orange juice, fruit cocktail.

Thursday: Yankee pot roast with gravy, mashed potato, mixed vegetables, wheat dinner roll, birthday cake.

Also, for planning ahead—

Monday: January 28: Stir fry chicken served over rice, Oriental blend vegetables, whole wheat bread, cranapple juice, pineapple tidbits.

Tuesday: January 29: Pasta fagioli with crackers, Southern breaded fish with tarter sauce, tater tots with ketchup, peas and onions, seedless rye bread, Bartlett pears.
