Hawleyville Man Dies In One-Car Accident In Oxford

OXFORD — A Hawleyville man died early on the morning of Saturday, January 12, in a one-car motor vehicle accident on Route 34 in Oxford, near Stevenson Dam, state police said.

State police said that motorist Robert R. Dean, 25, of 14 Old Hawleyville Road, Newtown, was alone while driving his 1995 Volkswagen Passat northward on Route 34, approximately 500 feet south of Route 34’s intersection with Coppermine Road at about 12:36 am, when while negotiating a curve in the road, Mr Dean lost control of the auto for an unknown reason.

The Volkswagen traveled to the left, crossed the road’s southbound lane, and then struck some metal-beam guardrailing located alongside the southbound road shoulder, state police said.

After it collided with the guardrail, the auto overturned onto its roof, coming to rest facing sideways in the southbound lane, state police said. Mr Dean was not wearing a seatbelt, according to state police.

Mr Dean was pronounced dead at the scene, state police said.

Mr Dean died accidentally due to head injuries, a spokeswoman for the chief state medical examiner’s office said January 14.

State police said the accident remains under investigation.

Mr Dean attended Newtown schools and was a graduate of Newtown High School, Class of 2000. He was a carpenter and worked in the family business.
