SOUTHBURY â The Audubon Center at Bent of the River, a 700-acre wildlife sanctuary and nature education center owned and managed by the National Audubon Society, is home to many species of birds, mammals, butterflies, and amphibians, as well as a rich diversity of tree and plant life. The grounds are open seven days a week during daylight hours.
The center has a number of programs set up for the public this month including the following.
*Sunday, January 20, and Thursday, January 24, 1 to 3 pm â Adult Nature Walk: Winter Botany and More: Winter weeds are the tough old skeletons of the plants that grew last summer and in many ways their bare, minimalist winter structure is more elegant than their summer fullness.
Naturalist Jim Drennan will guide participants through the fields and meadows of the Bent, identifying the remains of summerâs flora, looking for animal tracks in the snow, ducks on the river, and birds at the feeders. Cost is $5 ($3 for members).
*Sundays, January 20 and 27, 1 to 4 pm â Sunday Afternoons at the Bent: Spend an afternoon exploring the Bentâs trails on your own and then visit the historic barn where tea and hot chocolate will be available and naturalist Jim Drennan will answer questions about the Bent and its wildlife. No charge.
Bent of the River, 185 East Flat Hill Road in South Britain, can be reached for additional information or reservations at 264-5098.
