Longtime Kindergarten Teacher
Alice Mary Rafferty, 93, of Sandy Hook died January 14 after a short stay in Filosa Convalescent Home, Danbury. Mrs Rafferty was predeceased by her husband William M. Rafferty in 1982.
She was born in Potsdam, N.Y. on November 26, 1914, to James M. and Gertrude (Lenney) Sullivan. Mrs Rafferty was a graduate of the Potsdam Normal School and received a masterâs degree from Western Connecticut University. She was a kindergarten teacher at Sandy Hook School until her retirement.
Mrs Rafferty was a communicant of St Rose of Lima Church.
Mrs Rafferty will be remembered as a great conversationalist with people of all ages, starting from the youngest. She had a quick wit and loved exchanging jokes and smart remarks. In her last few years, she enjoyed watching the birds and the deer from her windows.
She is remembered by her six daughters and their families, Maureen Rohmer, widow of John Rohmer, of Newtown; Sheila Susini and Larry Morse of Mississauga, Canada; Ellen Rafferty and Robert Jones of Madison, Wisc.; Kate Rafferty Hall and Doug Hall of Chichester, N.H.; Ann Rafferty and Tom Pilbeam of Ovid, Mich.; and Jane Rafferty of Ann Arbor, Mich. She is also survived by four grandchildren and one great-grandchild, Eileen Rohmer and her husband, Keith Cormier, of Oakland, Calif.; Meghan Gioffe, her husband Jim Gioffe, and daughter Bridget Gioffe of Brookfield; Jonathan Hall of Chichester, N.H.; and Meaghan Rafferty-Jones of Madison, Wisc.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St Rose of Lima Church on Saturday, January 19, at 11 am. Interment will follow in St Rose Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown, Friday, January 18, from 4 pm to 7 pm.
In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Regional Hospice of Western Connecticut, 405 Main Street, Danbury CT 06810 would be appreciated.
