FOR JANUARY 28 – RICHARD HICKAM EXPRESSIOISTIC PORTRAITS – NO CUTS - WD/jl set 1-17 #615633

NEW YORK CITY — “Richard Hickam: Beyond the Surface” will be on view from February 5 to March 25 at the Allan Stone Gallery. The exhibition will feature a new series of 24 vibrant, richly textured expressionistic portraits that are both startling and revealing.

Hickam’s paintings reach a perceptual and conceptual level that goes beyond the superficial. The contorted faces and distorted figures maintain a haunting presence that unapologetically grabs the viewer. His intensely colored, heavily impastoed portraits are direct and raw, interspersed with feelings of isolation and melancholy.

Born in 1944 in Los Angeles, Hickam moved to Missouri in 1949. After obtaining a MFA in painting from the University of New Mexico in 1968, he started teaching, first at the Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids in 1968 and then from 1969 to 1973 at Columbus College of Art in Ohio.

Hickam’s first show, 31 years ago at the Allan Stone Gallery, was of photorealist paintings.

The Allan Stone Gallery is at 113 East 90th Street. For information, 212-987-1997 or allanstonegallery.com.
